STELLA'S TOMB RAIDER UNFINISHED BUSINESS REMASTERED WALKTHROUGH

LOOKING FOR DARK MODE?

Tomb Raider I-III Remastered updates are in progress. For levels that have not yet been updated, I will continue to link to the ORIGINAL WALKTHROUGHS, which cover all the basics. Please check the introductory notes at the start of the first TR1 level for info on my process, modern vs. classic tank controls, etc. This guide covers most but not all possible achievements/trophies. Follow this link for the archived classic Return to Egypt walkthrough.

LEVEL 3: RETURN TO EGYPT - REMASTERED

Updated: 1/3/25()

Starting Inventory: Pistols (unlimited ammo), compass
Secrets:Pickups: 53, including the Shotgun, Magnums, Uzis, and Gold Key  Kills: 41 or 23*

*The "Crocodile Rock" achievement/trophy requires you to obtain all pickups without harming any crocodiles, so a "perfect" score would be 53 pickups and 23 kills. The running kill counts below track the total with or without crocodiles.

OBJECTIVES: On returning to the area she explored in the original Tomb Raider, Lara finds parts of the area flooded. Explore to find a way deeper into the ruins. Navigate through some trappy, enemy-infested bits to locate a Gold Key. Climb to the top of the dark cavern to find the door that your key unlocks. Work your way through another trappy, enemy-infested area to emerge into the desert at night. Beautiful? Absolutely! Serene? Not so much. Explore to find some hidden goodies, then cross a bridge to enter the next level.

ROOM ABOVE LARGE POOL: Slide into the level. Approach the edge and the trapdoor opens, illuminating a pair of cat statues in the two openings ahead. There are two easy but missable achievements/trophies at the start of this level. To get both, start by taking a running jump across the gap without pressing Action. Climb/jump up into the right opening and look down to find a large medi pack (1). Picking it up unlocks the "Behind Cat's Eyes" achievement/trophy. Climb back through the eyehole and return to the edge of the trapdoor. Notice the crocodile (1 or 0)* in the pool below and the sand bar on the far side. That's where you're headed. Swan dive off the edge (hold Walk and press Jump + Forward together) to land gracefully in the pool, unlocking "Down the Rabbit Hole." Quickly swim forward to the sand bar and climb out of the water. (screenshots)

FLOODED CAVE WITH SPHINX & OBELISK: Do things look a bit familiar? That's right. It's TR1 and Khamoon all over again! If you're going for the"Crocodile Rock" achievement/trophy, do not shoot the croc, since this requires you to get all pickups without harming any crocodiles. Of course, if you don't care about achievements, or already have this one, you can use pistols to kill the croc from here. (screenshots)

NOTE: If you accidentally kill a croc or two before realizing this achievement exists, you can restart the level. Just drown Lara, allow the Passport menu to open, then page to the right for the Restart Level option.

On the far (north) side of the sand bar is another small pool. To get the items on the opposite ledge without attracting the 2 crocodiles (2-3 or 0)* lurking below, move onto the jutting rock on the right side of the pool. Walk out to the edge, so Lara is standing at the peak of the angled rock. Hop back once. Then take a running jump, without pressing Action, to land on the long ledge with the small medi pack and magnum clips (2-3). Jump in the pool and swim into the small, rectangular opening where the crocodiles came from. Retrieve some shotgun shells (4) sitting on the bottom. Roll and quickly swim out of the cave and up to the left. Climb out onto the sand bar to avoid getting chomped. (screenshots)

NOTE: Again, if you don't care about achievements/trophies, you can take a dip to lure out the crocs and shoot them from above before going after the pickups.

There are several items in and around the large pool below the sphinx. Again, you'll need to outswim the first crocodile if you want that achievement/trophy. Swim to the front left corner of the sphinx, where the edge is a little lower, and climb out. Go behind the sphinx's head and pick up some shotgun shells (5). Continue straight through and hop down on the sphinx's other shoulder. Swim across the pool to the west and climb out on the ledge above the submerged doorway. (The obelisk is off to the right.) If you like, you can shoot the panther (4 or 1)* in the next area through the fence. That way you won't have to face it head-on later. (Notice the shotgun and shells on the ground beyond the fence. You'll be getting them soon.) (screenshots)

NOTE: You can take a shortcut to the SHOTGUN by using the so-called "fence bug" to run through at one of the seams. If you're not familiar with this trick, check out my see my useful bugs page (https://tombraiders.net/stella/goodbugs.html) for instructions and screenshots. Note that if you want all the kills, this actually ends up taking longer than the normal route. See the note on the Fence Bug Shortcut at the end of the walkthrough for more info.

Underwater, near the base of the obelisk, you'll also find 2 sets of magnum clips (6-7). Grab them, avoiding the first crocodile if necessary, then climb out of the pool on the long ledge near the obelisk. (screenshots)

Take a running jump from the ledge to the top of the obelisk. Standing here opens an underwater door between the sphinx's paws. This door is timed to close after a little while, but the timer doesn't start until Lara leaves the top of the obelisk. So pick up the magnum clips (8), save if you like, then take a running jump toward the sphinx. Swim down behind the carved block in front of the sphinx and follow the passage to the room with the pharaoh statues, where you'll hear the chime indicating you've found SECRET #1. At this point the door reopens and stays open. You can surface inside the secret room to breathe, but there's no place to climb out of the water and kill that crocodile (5 or 1)*. So quickly pick up the goodies on the raised ledges: a small medi pack and 2 boxes of shotgun shells (9-11). Then swim back to the main pool, take a breath if necessary, and swim through the tunnel to the left of the obelisk and below the iron fence. (screenshots)

Alternatively, if you aren't attempting the "Crocodile Rock" achievement/trophy, as soon as the secret registers, turn around and swim back out. The croc will follow you back to the main pool. Climb out of the water on the ledge or sand bar so you can shoot it. Then return to the secret room to pick up the goodies. When you have everything, return to the main pool, take a breath if necessary, and swim through the wide passageway to the left of the obelisk and below the iron fence.

POOL NEAR CAT TEMPLE: Surface in the next area and swim to the right. Climb out of the water in the rectangular doorway. A panther (6 or 2)* lurks inside the room (2 panthers if you didn't kill the other one through the fence earlier). Run into the room, jump past the panther, roll, shoot, and repeat. There's not much room to maneuver here, but try not to let the panther back Lara against a wall, since it's hard to get free if that happens. When the coast is clear, pick up a small medi pack (12) and a box of shotgun shells (13) in this room, plus the SHOTGUN (14) and another box of shells (15) in the sandy area outside. (screenshots)

NOTE: If you've been killing crocodiles as you go along and want to conserve health here, you can instead trigger the panther, jump in the water, swim through the passageway back to the first pool, and shoot the panther through the windows or fence. This is time-consuming, but might be useful for a no-medi pack run.

Before moving on, vault up onto the low ledge above where the shotgun was lying. Turn right and approach the raised niche. Looking at the small Egyptian vase inside unlocks the achievement/trophy "That Belongs in a Museum!" (screenshots)

Now head to the far end of the sandy walkway, overlooking the pool near the CAT TEMPLE. Swim across the pool toward the three painted columns in the northwest corner. As you go, another crocodile (7 or 2)* appears in the northeast corner of the pool between the cat temple and the panther room. Retrieve the shotgun shells (16) on the bottom near the green boulder. Then quickly climb out on the base of one of the columns or on the sand behind them. (screenshots)

Notice the gold door on the west wall. We'll open it shortly. Follow the sandy ledges around to the right until you can jump onto the gold wall surrounding the cat statue. If you like, you can jump over to to the gold wall in front of the statue in order to shoot 3 panthers (8-10 or 3-5)* that appear on the ledges high above. It's not necessary to kill them since you won't be going up there, but you can do it if you want to. Just take care not to accidentally target the crocodiles if you're working on that challenge. (screenshots)

Jump into the small pool below the cat statue and pull the lever to open the gold door on the west side of the pool near the pharaoh statue. To get out of the pool, pull up on the slanted ledge behind the cat statue and quickly backflip to land on the pedestal. Now, head for the gold door. (screenshots)

CORRIDOR WITH PAINTED COLUMNS & SPIKES: Enter and proceed, but watch your back. When Lara reaches the fourth set of painted columns, just before the slope leading down into a spike pit, a panther (11 or 6)* attacks from behind. If you turn around to face the entrance and hop backwards to trigger the panther, you can see it coming. Wait to fire until Lara locks on, and three shotgun blasts should take it down. Or, you can lock on with pistols, jump over the panther, roll, and continue shooting as you back up toward the entrance. (screenshots)

When the cat is dead, walk to the edge of the doorway overlooking the third room, but don't step off or Lara will slide into the spikes below. Take a standing jump to the base of the first painted column on the left. Walk across it, turn around to face the entrance, and safety drop to the flat, sandy spot below. Or, from the doorway, jump down to the near left corner, slide down the slope and jump over the spikes to land on the flat spot in the far left corner. Walk through the spikes into the dimly lit passageway. (screenshots)

DARK PASSAGE & SECRET ROOM: Follow the dark passage to the right. (Or, if you don't care about all items/secrets, instead turn left and skip to the next section.) Climb up onto the block ahead. Walk to the opposite edge of the block above more spikes. Take a standing jump to grab the next ledge; pull up. Again walk to the edge, turn Lara a little to the right and jump over more spikes onto the next ledge. Carefully step off the far edge to land on the ledge below, taking care not to run on into the next spike pit. Jump across that pit to the next ledge. Then climb into the doorway above on the right. (screenshots)

The carved door opens automatically. Inside is SECRET #2—a large medi pack, magnum clips, and 2 boxes of shotgun shells (17-20). The exit also opens when you approach, and you emerge back at the CORRIDOR WITH PAINTED COLUMNS AND SPIKES. Take a running jump from the doorway to the base of the second pillar on the right. Drop to the floor and once again walk through the spikes into the dark cave entrance. (screenshots)

SANDY CAVE WITH CAT STATUE, SPIKES & MOVABLE BLOCK: This time turn left. As you enter the wide, sandy cavern ahead, the camera shifts to give you a bird's eye view. Note the movable block and spikes ahead, but ignore that area for now. Instead turn right and follow the path between the rocks toward the cat statue on the high ledge. The statue transforms into a live panther (12 or 7)*, but it can't reach Lara from above. Pull up onto the rock ledge on the right where it dips down in a V. Kill the panther then jump across to the ledge with the carved square pillar. (screenshots)

Follow the tunnel to the left of the pillar, proceeding slowly to avoid a boulder (1/10) that drops from the ceiling directly in front of Lara. (This is one of the boulders you'll need to trigger for the "Roll, Action!" achievement/trophy. There are 10 in this level, 47 across all 4 Unfinished Business levels.) Jump across the gap where the boulder dropped. Then climb the stairs on the right to emerge above the carved pillar. Drop down onto the pillar and collect the shotgun shells (21). (screenshots)

For a quick and easy achievement/trophy, save the game and turn to face the roughly hexagonal opening in the west cavern wall, through which you can see the mountains and sky beyond. Take a running jump through this opening to fall into the rocky area beyond. Lara will die, and the "Alone in the Dark" achievement/trophy should pop. (screenshots)

HIGH ABOVE CAVE WITH CAT STATUE: Reload and climb back into the doorway above the carved pillar. Turn turn around to face out over the cavern. Hop back from the edge and then take a running jump to grab the high ledge directly ahead and pull up. Vault onto the angled block directly ahead and look off to the left, where you'll notice some shotgun shells (22) on another high ledge. That's where you're headed. To get there and unlock the "Schmitty's Leap" achievement/trophy in the process, first turn around so Lara's back is to the open area. Stand near the middle of the block. Sidestep to the right as far as you can. Then flip to the right to land on the sloping center-right block facing uphill. Slide back, grab the edge, and traverse to the right until you can pull up on the darker colored flat ledge. Turn around again to face the ammo. Walk to the edge. Hop back once. Then save the game just in case. Take a running swan dive (i.e., run Forward then quickly press Jump + Walk simultaneously to dive onto the ledge with the ammo). If you do this correctly, the achievement/trophy should pop just as the chime sounds for SECRET #3. Pick up the shotgun shells (22)—or the SHOTGUN itself if you missed it earlier. To get down, safety drop to the tan rocks below. Then carefully drop/slide to the ground. (screenshots)

NOTE: I'm not sure of the specific lore around this achievement, but I assume it's a nod to Mike Schmitt, Core Design's producer for the classic TR series.

SANDY CAVE WITH SPIKES & MOVABLE BLOCK (again): Return along the sandy path leading away from the ledge with the carved pillar. At the T, turn right and go over the low sand hill to the far right (southeast) corner of the cave. Here you'll find 2 carved stone blocks (leave them alone for now) and a field of spikes. Pull out your shotgun and walk carefully through the spikes. A panther (13 or 8)* emerges from the doorway ahead as you approach. Kill it without jumping around so Lara doesn't get impaled. Pick up some shotgun shells (23) on the flat spot to the right. (Alternatively, walk through the spikes, step up on the low block with the shotgun shells, and shoot the panther with pistols from there. Then walk carefully back into the spikes.) Continue through the spikes to the far end of the cave. Grab another box of shells (24) on the ground near where the panther emerged. (screenshots)

NOTE: The dark passageway behind the second box of shells leads to secret #3, which you should already have if you followed this walkthrough. If not, avoid that area. The boulder trap inside is easier to bypass from the other side. To get there, return through the spikes, turn left at the movable block, then left again. Follow the walkthrough above to trip the boulder and get the secret.

Return through the field of spikes to the other side of the cave. Pull the carved stone block out of the way to reveal a second block. Go over/around the first block and push the second block twice to proceed. Follow the tunnel to a pool. (screenshots)

CAVERN WITH POOL & WOODEN BRIDGES: Across the pool there's a panther on patrol. Ignore it for now and instead walk up the short ramp to the right. Jump across to the little island with the pedestal and key. Another panther (14 or 9)* appears from behind the pedestal. So immediately backflip to the ramp where you started or jump up on the pedestal and kill the cat from there. Kill the first panther (15 or 10)* on the south ledge from the safety of the island. Then take the GOLD KEY (25) from the pedestal. When you do, the camera zooms out to show a cat statue on a high ledge, which is now illuminated. We'll climb up there shortly. First, let's go after the MAGNUMS. (screenshots)

CROCODILE CAVE: Completing this area without killing any crocodiles is challenging, but you'll need to do it if you want the "Crocodile Rock" achievement/trophy. Start by moving to the southwest corner of the island with the pedestal. Look to the west, beyond the tan rock formation with the square column extending up to the ceiling, and the carved block on the bottom of the pool, to spot an underwater opening. (If you like, you can scout ahead using Photo Mode.) (screenshots)

NOTE: If you'd prefer to kill the crocodiles as you go, see the second footnote for tips.

Dive into the pool and enter that tunnel. As you go, a crocodile (16 or 10)* spawns in the cavern behind you and starts to follow Lara, so don't linger. Follow the tunnel forward, staying close to the left wall. When you come to a dark stone block directly ahead, turn right. Continue along a wider passageway that slopes upward slightly. Turn right again at the next corner. Continue straight ahead into a room with a greenish stone structure. Surface in the far right corner. Climb out of the water. Quickly run around the corner to the right and pick up the small medi pack (26) as 4 crocodiles (17-20 or 10)* emerge from the floor-level openings. As soon as you have the health pack, roll and take a running jump onto the green stone ledge. Pick up the MAGNUMS and some ammo (27-28). (screenshots)

Take a running jump from the ledge, over the crocs, into the water on either side of the pointed stone structure. The crocs on land will not follow, but you'll still need to watch out for that first crocodile (16 or 10)* in the water. Swim back through the tunnels the way you came. First forward then left, past the metal grating and left again, then on into the cavern with the wooden bridges. Swim on past the carved block and climb out of the water on the island where you found the key. (screenshots)

CAVERN WITH POOL & WOODEN BRIDGES (again): Finally, retrieve the magnum clips (29) on the bottom of the pool in the southeast corner. Another 2 crocodiles (21-22 or 10)* spawn when you approach the ammo, so quickly climb out of the water on the ledge just above where the clips were. (This is the same ledge where you killed the second panther earlier.) (screenshots)

Start up the ramp. Enter the room on the left to get a small medi pack (30). Then exit, turn left, and continue to the top of the ramp. Follow the wooden bridges around to the top. When you reach the alcove at the end of the last bridge, turn around so you're facing down the bridge. Jump straight up to grab the ledge overhead and pull up. Turn around so the light-colored wall is on Lara's left. Ignore the room on the right for now. (There's a cranky crocodile inside; we'll deal with him shortly.) Instead, jump across the gap to the opposite ledge. Climb the two block steps on the left. Ignore the tan slope below on the right for now. Instead, continue climbing up and around to the left to find a large medi pack (31). Once you have it, climb back down the way you came to the step above the tan slope. (screenshots)

CROCODILE PIT (optional): At the bottom of this chute is a small, dark room containing 2 crocodiles (23-24 or 10)*. This is the same room from which the crocs emerged into the CROCODILE CAVE where you found the MAGNUMS. If you didn't already explore that area, there will instead be 6 crocs in the pit. There are no pickups down there, so you don't have to slide into the pit unless you want all the kills. If you're going for the "Crocodile Rock" achievement/trophy, you'll definitely want to avoid it. Instead, climb down the block steps and jump to the ledge on the left. Skip the next paragraph. (screenshots)

The best way I've found to deal with the croc pit is to slide down the chute facing uphill and grab the edge at the end. Then, as you drop, draw the shotgun. It works well in close quarters; you'll only need one clean shot for each beast. When you're finished, safety drop through the opening opposite the two small ones. This deposits you in the passage between the movable blocks and the cavern with the pool. Return to the top of the wooden bridges. This time, climb into the opening above on the right. (screenshots)

LOW-CEILINGED ROOM WITH CROCODILE: As you step forward, a crocodile (25 or 10)* scurries out of the low opening ahead. If you want to kill it and also conserve shotgun ammo, you can you can roll and jump over to the ledge above the bridge (where you climbed up before). Then shoot the croc from there with pistols. To avoid the croc, run to the right, roll, hop back, and grab the edge of the floor. Traverse to the right, high above the pool, until you can pull up. Then immediately back flip onto the ledge with the cat statue. (screenshots)

If you want every pickup, save the game. (See the bug note below.) Then jump back across the gap and run forward to the far left corner of the little room to find some shotgun shells (32). Easy enough if you killed the crocodile. If it's still alive, you'll need to run/jump past it, grab the shells, then turn and run/jump back to the ledge with the cat statue as quickly as possible. Behind the cat statue is a small room with a locked door. Use the GOLD KEY to open it. (screenshots)

NOTE: If the crocodile is still alive, I strongly recommend saving the game before going for the shotgun ammo. A minor glitch can allow the crocodile to pin Lara in the corner. I was able to get free by repeatedly rolling/side flipping, but Lara took a lot of damage in the process. I found it helped to grab the shells then turn in place, rather than rolling, before running back to the doorway.

TURQUOISE ROOM WITH THREE BOULDER-TRAPPED RAMPS: Save the game before entering this room, especially if you're going for achievements/trophies. This one is a little tricky, and will probably take a few tries. "Jaws of Death" achievement/trophy requires you to "jump over the three boulders on the center road on the way to the cat image without getting hurt." There are lots of YouTube guides showing different solutions with both classic and modern controls. But if you're struggling, it is possible to cheese this one by jumping over the first boulder and completely avoiding the second and third.

Start by running forward up the steps toward the middle ramp, as the door closes behind you and 3 boulders (2-4/10) come rolling down the 3 ramps. When you get to the top step run forward and jump over the approaching boulder. If Lara's foot skims the boulder, you'll see blood and your health bar will appear, showing she's taken damage. Reload and try again. If you clear the first boulder without injury, stop and take a breath. Run up the ramp just until you see the next boulder (5/10) drop from the ceiling. Then turn to either side, hop back, and grab the edge of the ramp. Hang there and wait for the boulder to pass. Pull up. Run up the ramp until just before the first of the two gold stripes and again turn, hop back, and grab the edge as the third boulder (6/10) drops and rolls past. Two more boulders (7-8/10) also drop and roll down the left and right ramps. Pull up and continue to the top of the ramp. As you approach the carved cat face, the achievement/trophy should unlock. (screenshots)

NOTE: If you're not interested in this particular achievement, you can just run into the room and move to either side to avoid the middle boulder. Then use the technique described above to trip and avoid the remaining boulders. You will need to trigger all 7 boulders in this area for the game-wide achievement/trophy "Roll, Action!"

Return to the entrance, where the boulders landed. There are 2 panthers (26-27 or 11-12)* roaming behind the fences on the left and right. You can shoot at them through the bars. But don't worry if you can't kill them yet. You'll have other chances. Approach the base of the ramp on the right (when facing up the ramps). Climb down the green blocks on the right onto a fenced-in ledge with some shotgun shells (33). You can also shoot at the panthers from there. (screenshots)

Climb back up, cross to the left side (when facing the three ramps), and climb down onto another green stone ledge that isn't fenced in. Finish off the panthers from here if you didn't before. A third panther (28 or 13)* spawns as you enter the small room on the far left. If you approach the entrance without stepping inside, you can roll to trigger the panther, then run and jump onto the nearest green block and shoot the panther from safety. Inside the room where the panther appeared are 2 small medi packs (34-35) on low ledges. (screenshots)

Return to the room with the green blocks below the three ramps. Enter the passageway in the northeast corner (next to the green block where you climbed down). At the first bend in the passage, you can vault up into the alcove with the cat statue for a vision of the area outside. Then continue up the passageway to the top. Pick up the small medi pack (36) and use the switch to open the large doors at the top of the boulder ramps. Return down the passageway to the room below the three ramps. (screenshots)

Cross to the northwest corner (near the fenced-in ledge where you got the shells earlier). Draw the shotgun before entering the passageway, since another panther (29 or 14)* lurks just inside. Kill it and continue up the ramp. At the first bend, vault up onto the ledge with the 3 cat face carvings and follow this passageway around and down to the end, where you'll find some shotgun shells (37) and magnum clips (38). (This passageway is very dark in the original version. Not so much in the remaster.) For some reason, the fence that previously separated this area from the room with the green blocks has disappeared. So you can go back the way you just came, or go out into the room and follow the northwest passageway back to the ledge with the 3 cat faces. Continue all the way up the passageway to the fenced-in area near the entrance where the three boulders landed. Pick up the small medi pack (39). (screenshots)

Now, if you like, you can use a variation on the fence bug to get through the bars. Position Lara facing the fence with her right foot just to the right of one of the seams between floor tiles. From this position she should be able to vault up through the bars to the floor above. Or take the long way: Return down the ramp to the room with the green blocks, cross to the northeast corner and climb back up the green ledges. (screenshots)

Run up the middle ramp. Assuming you already tripped the boulder traps, as described above, this area is now safe, as long as you don't fall into the spikes or the room far below. Shoot the panther (30 or 15)* in the small room at the top of the ramps before dropping down into that area. (screenshot)

ROOMS AT THE TOP OF THE THREE RAMPS - SPIKES & POOL BELOW: Here you'll find a pair of wooden bridges over spikes. Take a standing jump to the first bridge, then a running jump to the second. Climb up near the cat statue to the right of the second bridge if you'd like another glimpse outside. Jump around to the various alcoves to pick up 2 boxes of shotgun shells and 2 small medi packs (40-43). (screenshots)

There's a crocodile-infested pool below the ledges where you found the health packs. Drop into the water below and quickly swim through the underwater opening to the west, avoiding the 2 crocodiles (31-32 or 15)* as much as you can. Follow the passage forward, upward, then left, into a low-ceilinged room with squat, square pillars. Grab some shotgun shells (44) ahead on the right. (If you plan to kill the crocodiles, you can skip this pickup for now.) Then swim to the far left (southeast) corner and pull the lever, which opens the door next to it. Swim through, climb out of the pool, and immediately kill a panther (33 or 16)* that attacks from the right. There's a carved block to the left of the pool that you can climb on to shoot the panther from safety. If you're killing crocodiles, rather than avoiding them for the achievement/trophy, you can now shoot them from the edge of the pool. Then go back to the underwater room with the lever to retrieve the shotgun ammo. (screenshots)

SANDY OUTDOOR AREA WITH IRON FENCES: The alcove to the northwest (ahead on the left when facing the pool) has goodies strewn on the ground and a double boulder trap (9-10/10) ready to be sprung. You can see the boulders up in the ceiling, so you'll be able to figure out where they'll roll. To unlock the "I'm not a Pin" achievement/trophy, save the game, then approach the trap along the seam between the tiles where the boulders will roll. As you cross the alcove's threshold, the boulders drop. Jump forward above the gap between the two boulders. If your timing is good, and your angle is fairly straight, Lara won't take damage, and the achievement/trophy will unlock. (These 2 boulders also count toward the total for the "Roll, Action!" achievement/trophy.) If you don't care about achievements, instead just run into the alcove and head for the safe area on the left as the boulders roll by. When the coast is clear, pick up 2 boxes of shotgun ammo and a small medi pack (45-47). (screenshots)

Now head south, the way the boulders went. Watch out for the concealed spikes in the pit where one boulder landed, as well as the more visible spikes just beyond the iron fence on the right. When you go through the opening in the fence, another panther (34 or 17)* charges from the top of the slope. The shotgun will make short work of it. There are 2 boxes of shotgun shells (48-49) at top of the slope. Take the box on the left first. When you pick up the box on the right, a third panther (35 or 18)* appears in the desert beyond the fence to the south. If you position Lara with her back to the fence before picking up the shells, then draw pistols or magnums immediately after, you can get in a few shots as the panther comes around the fence toward her. Or, just wait for it to approach and use the shotgun. (screenshots)

Return to the pool and climb over the carved block on the right. Follow the path forward. Two of the cat statues transform into 2 mummies (36-37 or 19-20)* as you approach. You can roll, run away, and climb back on the block to shoot them from safety. If they move out of range, take running jump over to the sandy mound on the left to get a better angle. Or, use the shotgun for quick, close-up kills. (screenshots)

The standing mummy on the other side of the wooden bridge is not a threat, but if you get too close to it, the level will end. So avoid it for now. (screenshot)

Move down the slope to the right of the bridge and climb down the ledges to the pool. Shoot (or ignore) the crocodile (38 or 20)* in the water. Swim down and pick up a small medi pack (50). Climb back up and around to the wooden bridge. Cross the bridge and approach the standing mummy. It drops through a trapdoor into the room below. If you've had enough, just step forward to finish the level. However, if you want all the kills, pickups, and a few more achievements/trophies, you'll need to make a foray into the desert. (screenshots)

INTO THE DESERT: While standing on the bridge tile closest to the mummy's dais, turn about 45 degrees to the left and take a running jump to land on the sandy slope two tiles beyond the dais's left corner block. Again, try not to land on or pass over the stone structure or the level will end. (screenshots)

There's a panther (39 or 21)* running around out here, so quickly climb up onto the back of the stone structure if you want a safe spot from which to shoot. Just be careful to only stand on the three blocks at the back. If you stand toward the front, the level will end. And do not move farther out into the desert. The sand is deadly! (I guess the level designers didn't want players straying too far.) Once you've taken care of the panther, save the game. Then step out into the desert. Lara will collapse and you'll unlock the "Exhausted" achievement/trophy. (screenshots)

Reload and continue exploring. The standing mummy is now prowling around inside the dais. You may be able to hear it growling, and you can see it if you look down into the opening, but you can't target it. (screenshot)

Next, you're headed for the small pool near the two gray blocks to the southwest. To get there safely, from the back of the stone dais, face the two palm trees. Hop down and proceed straight ahead (south) between the trees. Off to the left there's more deadly sand. Beyond the palm trees, continue straight ahead. Then, just before the gray block, turn right and climb onto the sandy ledge near the pool. Swim down to pick up the UZIS and 2 sets of Uzi clips (51-53). If you found the SHOTGUN and MAGNUMS earlier, you'll unlock the "Bastet's Stash" achievement/trophy for finding all weapons in Egypt. (screenshots)

After picking up the guns, there will be a mummy (40 or 22)* running around above. If you climb out on the square ledge in the far left corner of the pool, you'll have a few seconds to shoot before it reaches Lara. Another mummy (41 or 23)* lurks in the desert to the west. If you switch to pistols and hop up onto the little hill with the two palm trees, you'll have a good angle on it, though you may need to wait for it to come into range. (screenshots)

For the last achievement/trophy, head for the carved block and large cat face to the south. I haven't mapped every safe tile, but as long as you head straight for it, and don't go past it, you'll be fine. Standing on the carved cat's face unlocks the achievement/trophy "Like Alice." (screenshots)

Return to the hill with the 2 palm trees and take a running jump over the fence into the area with the spikes and boulders. Go down the path to the left, past the spikes, then around to the right toward the pool. Again, climb over the carved block to the right of the pool. Follow the sandy path to the wooden bridge, and this time, go all the way across to end the level. (screenshots)

NOTE: If you obtained all 53 items without harming any crocodiles, the "Crocodile Rock" achievement/trophy should unlock on the stats screen.

UPDATE HISTORY: 1/2/25 - First major update for the remastered version posted. Updates made prior to the Tomb Raider I-III Remastered release, including credit for tips sent in by other players, are tracked in the original guide.
1/3/25 - Added running boulder count for the "Roll, Action!" achievement/trophy (trip all the boulder traps).

FENCE BUG SHORTCUT: In the FLOODED CAVE WITH SPHINX & OBELISK near the beginning of the level, you can take a shortcut to the SHOTGUN by using the fence bug to run through at one of the seams. However, if you want all the kills, this actually ends up taking longer than the normal route. If you're not familiar with the fence bug, check out my see my useful bugs section at tombraiders.net/stella/goodbugs2.html for instructions and screenshots.

After picking up the gun and shells, enter the room on the right to find more goodies. The second panther appears only when Lara walks across the bottom of the short ramp leading to the exit. So either do this and then jump into the water to avoid the panther, exit the way you came so as not to trigger it, or back down the ramp with the shotgun drawn and kill it when it appears in the far left corner of the room. The crocodile does not appear in the POOL NEAR THE CAT TEMPLE unless you first swim about halfway through the long underwater tunnel leading back to the sphinx area, then swim back toward the cat temple and the four painted columns.

ALTERNATE STRAT FOR CAVERN WITH WOODEN BRIDGES AND CROCODILE CAVE: If you're not attempting the "Crocodile Rock" achievement/trophy, it's safer to kill the crocs as you go. After taking the GOLD KEY (25), swim through the tunnel to the west to the room with the MAGNUMS, as described above. A crocodile should spawn behind you as you go. Avoid it for now. Climb out of the water on either side of the pointy green stone structure and immediately run forward and jump onto the ledge with the MAGNUMS and magnum ammo (26-27) to avoid 2 more crocodiles (16-17 if you're going for all kills) that come out of the floor-level openings. Kill them with pistols to conserve ammo. Approach the small medi pack (28) on the ground, but before picking it up, turn around to face the ledge where you found the guns. When you take the medi pack, 2 more crocs (18-19) emerge. Jump back onto the ledge to kill them. Now take care of the crocodile (20) in the water. You may need to take a dip to get its attention, or swim back to the pool below the wooden bridges, climb out of the water and then shoot it. Return to the main walkthrough above, at the section "CAVERN WITH POOL & WOODEN BRIDGES (again)." When you approach the magnum ammo (29) in the southeast corner of the pool, the next 2 crocodiles (21-22) will spawn. Quickly climb out of the water (on the ledge above the ammo, near the entrance, on the island, etc.) to kill them. If the first crocodile (20) didn't spawn when you swam through the tunnel to the room with the MAGNUMS, just swim around the pool until it does. Then climb out of the water to shoot it.

DARK MODE: I plan to add optional dark mode for these pages, but my current priority is updating the walkthroughs. Meanwhile, may I suggest a reputable dark mode browser extension, such as Dark Reader? (Download only from trusted sites, like darkreader.org or your browser's web store.)
