NOTES ON THE REMASTER: I have attempted to provide running kill, item, and secret counts. (Details are in a footnote following the first-level walkthrough.) I have also tried to cover all achievements/trophies, except New Game+. These guides are based on classic tank controls, but I hope they will be useful for those using modern controls. Follow this link for the archived classic guide. Chronicles does not include a "Restart Level" option, so I recommend making a new save at the beginning of each level in case you need to replay. Follow this link for Steam/GOG save files.

IMPORTANT: For the "Hell and High Water" achievement/trophy, you must avoid fire and electrical damage through the entire level. As usual, I recommend saving in a new slot at the beginning. Quick-save as you go along, but don't overwrite the first save in case you need to replay.
DIVING SUIT AREA: You're back inside the nuclear sub, only things have changed a bit after the blast. Pick up the flares (1) (120/239) at Lara's feet. There are no goodies in the rooms ahead, so turn around and drop through the hole in the floor into the TORPEDO ROOM. (screenshots)
Advance to trigger the appearance of one of Mikhailov's men (1) (39/62), who comes through the doorway directly ahead. Then hop back firing. He drops Uzi ammo (2) (121/239). Proceed past the racks of torpedoes. Exit the room, turn right, and kill another enemy (2) (40/62) in the passageway. He drops Desert Eagle clips (3) (122/239). Continue around the corner to the end of the passageway and climb the ladder to the deck above. (screenshots)
At the top of the ladder, just ahead on the right, a side corridor leads back to the MESS HALL. It's partially flooded, and there are small fires blocking the way. For now, continue forward along the passageway and around the corner to the left. (screenshots)
NOTE: If you like, you can wait to confront the gangster in the STOREROOM ahead. You will need to return here later anyway. I figured the Uzi ammo he drops might be helpful. You'll get the Uzis momentarily. Also, damage from enemies does not affect the "Hell and High Water" achievement/trophy (above) so heal if necessary. Your medipacks won't carry over into the next level.
Advance with guns drawn and take out another gangster (3) (41/62) in the STOREROOM on the right. He drops Uzi ammo (4) (123/239). (The shelves and drawers here are empty.) The ducts above have collapsed, and the door opposite the storeroom requires a keycard, which you still don't have. So return to the previous intersection. (screenshots)
In order to progress, you'll have to go through the BURNING HALLWAY. Approach the first flame but don't get too close. The way the flames are rendered in the remaster makes it difficult to tell exactly where they are. Don't trust your eyes. Step down onto the first flooded tile. Position Lara in the middle of this tile. (The metal 'X' on the floor marks the spot.) Quick-save. Then take a standing jump over the fire. If you set it up correctly, Lara will land between the two flames and won't take any heat damage. (screenshots)
Enter the STOREROOM on the left. Search the shelves near the crate to find the UZIS (5) (124/239). Again, the duct overhead is blocked. So return to the corridor, turn left, and jump over the second flame the same way you did the first. Step up into the MESS HALL. (screenshots)
Cutscene: Live wires dangle into the water pooled on the floor. Not a safe place to play.
If Lara steps in the water on the floor, the electric shock will quickly drain her health (and you'll fail the "Hell and High Water" achievement). So use the tabletops to get across. Take a standing jump from the doorway onto the tabletop ahead. Take another standing jump to the next table, on the left side so Lara doesn't hit her head on the overhanging duct and fall into the water. (screenshots)
The KITCHEN is here on the left, but wait to go there. More dangling wires prevent you from getting anything done. Instead, jump to the third table on this side of the room. Walk to the corner of the table nearest the doorway at the end of the room. Hop back then take a running jump, pressing Action to lower Lara's arc, so she lands just inside the doorway. (Or, walk to the narrow end of the table, take a standing jump with Action onto the table nearest the door. Turn left, walk to the edge, then take another standing jump with Action into the doorway.) It's safe to walk through the water in the next hallway. Turn right at the T and kill the gangster (4) (42/62) hiding in the next STOREROOM. He won't be needing his SWIPE CARD (6) (125/239) anymore, so feel free to take it. Also grab a small medipack (7) (126/239) from the shelf opposite the door. (screenshots)
Return to the entrance to the MESS HALL with the checkered tablecloths and electrified floor. Take a standing jump from the doorway to the table directly ahead. Move to the left side of the table, so Lara isn't standing under the ceiling duct. Then take standing jumps to the next table, then the next. There's still nothing doing in the HEAD, so you can skip that area. Turn right, walk to the narrow end of the table, and take a standing jump with Action onto the table across the aisle. Take another standing jump with Action into the doorway with the flames beyond. (screenshots)
BURNING HALLWAY (again): Jump over the flames as you did before. (If you missed the UZIS in the storeroom between the two flames, get them now.) At the T-intersection, follow the passageway to the right. (Left leads back down to the TORPEDO ROOM.) If you didn't deal with him earlier, there'll be a gangster (3, above) lurking in the STOREROOM at the end of this passageway on the right. He drops Uzi ammo (4, above). Use the SWIPE CARD you got from the previous enemy to open the hatch just across the corridor. (screenshots)
BEHIND THE SWIPE CARD DOOR: Enter and proceed straight ahead. Ignore the flooded corridor with dangling wires on the right for now, but notice locked STATEROOM door at the end. You'll be back when it's safe. Climb the ladder ahead on the left. (screenshot)
UPPER DECK - HAZARDOUS CONTROL ROOM: A sensible person would shut off the power before attempting to cross the next dangerous area, but not you; you're Lara Croft. If you want the "Nekrasov Woman" achievement/trophy, you must retrieve the NITROGEN CANISTER on the far console without taking any damage and before turning off the power.
NOTE: If you don't care about achievements, just skip the next 2 paragraphs. You can get the pickups here later when it's safe.
Move into the control room doorway but don't step down into the electrified water. Take a standing jump onto the console ahead on the left, then a running jump to the middle left console (near the dangling wires). Take another running jump to the next console, aiming for the right side, where it slopes downward and there's no fire. Turn right to face the console with the yellow canister, just across the aisle. Then take a standing jump with Action (so Lara doesn't bang her head on the overhead duct) to land there. If you haven't taken any damage, the "Nekrasov Woman" unlocks when you pick up the NITROGEN CANISTER (8) (127/239). (screenshots)
If you also want the "Hell and High Water" achievement/trophy, you still need to avoid fire and electrical damage, so do not step into the electrified water to get the DESERT EAGLE and other pickups nearby. You'll be able to get them easily once you shut off the power. For now, turn to face the entrance and take a running jump onto the middle left console. Take a running jump to land on the left side of the burning console diagonally across the aisle. Walk to the corner nearest the entrance and take one final standing jump with Action into the doorway. Continue along the corridor to a to a SECOND CONTROL ROOM WITH PERISCOPES. Cross the room and open the hatch with the wheel. (screenshots)
Cutscene: Lara meets the injured admiral. She offers to help him reach an escape pod, but he refuses. He gives her a key and tells her the oxygen tank the pod requires can be found in his stateroom.
After the cutscene, you'll have a SILVER KEY (9) (128/239) in your inventory. Make a mental note of the ladder beside the admiral. This leads to the ESCAPE POD. If you check it out, you'll notice there are two empty receptacles. You can place the NITROGEN CANISTER on the left if you like, but you'll also need OXYGEN to make the pod work. (screenshots)
VENTILATION DUCTS: Go back into the SECOND CONTROL ROOM WITH PERISCOPES. Notice the vents on the duct running along near the ceiling on the left side of the room. The second vent cover is loose. Stand on the square map table beneath the vent and jump straight up while firing pistols to shatter the slats. Jump from the edge of the little table to grab the opening. Pull up. (Now you're inside the ducts where Lara overheard the admiral and Mikhailov arguing in the first submarine level.) Crawl to the right and around the corner to a trapdoor. Open it and drop into yet another small STOREROOM. (screenshots)
STOREROOM WITH AN ELECTRICAL SWITCH: The power shutoff switch is high on the wall between the two yellow signs. Position Lara directly under the switch. Then jump straight up and hold Action to grab it. Lara's weight throws the switch, shutting off the electricity in strategic areas of the sub, deactivating the live wires. The admiral's key doesn't open the locked storeroom door. So, for now, return through the duct and drop down into the CONTROL ROOM WITH PERISCOPES. (screenshots)
Follow the corridor back to the HAZARDOUS CONTROL ROOM, which is a bit less hazardous now. (You still need to avoid the fires, but this isn't hard.) Enter and pick up a large medipack, Desert Eagle ammo, and the DESERT EAGLE PISTOL (10-12) (129-131/239), scattered around the floor. If you didn't get the yellow NITROGEN CANISTER (counted above) earlier, be sure to take it now. Exit and go to the right. Climb down the ladder to the deck below. (screenshots)
FIRST SECRET: The first passageway on the left, leading to Yarofev's STATEROOM, was previously blocked by live wires but is now safe. Before going in, take a side trip for a secret. Continue straight on through the open swipe-card door. Turn right and follow the corridor back to the BURNING HALLWAY. Jump the flames like you did before (above). Run through the MESS HALL, which is safe now that the power is shut off, into the KITCHEN, on the left. Pick up the golden rose (13) (132/239) from the floor. This is SECRET #1 (17/36). (screenshots)
Return through the MESS HALL and the BURNING HALLWAY. Turn right at the T and continue around the corner then through the open swipe-card door at the end of the hall. On the right, before the ladder leading to the UPPER DECK, is the corridor with dangling wires. The power is off, and you have the admiral's SILVER KEY, so move past the wires, unlock the door, and go in. (screenshots)
STATEROOM: Search the cabinets to find a small medipack and OXYGEN CANISTER (14-15) (133-134/239). Two bad guys (5-6) (43-44/62) ambush Lara in the hallway as she leaves. Take care of them. (Might as well whip out that Desert Eagle, since this will be your only opportunity to use it.) Pick up the BRONZE KEY (16) (135/239) one of them drops. Now you can get the second secret. SECOND SECRET: Climb the ladder at the right end of the passageway to get back to the UPPER DECK. Follow the corridor to the SECOND CONTROL ROOM WITH PERISCOPES. Jump from the map table to grab the open duct, pull up, and crawl in. Follow the duct back to the STOREROOM WITH THE ELECTRICAL SWITCH. Use the BRONZE KEY to open the locked door. There's another golden rose (17) (136/239), SECRET #2 (18/36), in the chest of drawers. If you found all of the other secrets in the submarine levels, the "Codex of Zapadnaya Litsa" achievement/trophy unlocks here. Return through the ducts to the CONTROL ROOM WITH PERISCOPES. ESCAPE: Go through the open hatch at the back to the small room with the injured admiral. Climb the ladder to the ESCAPE POD. Use the NITROGEN CANISTER in the receptacle on the left. This opens the other receptacle. Use the OXYGEN CANISTER there. (screenshots)
If you completed the Sinking Submarine without fire or electrical damage, the "Hell and High Water" achievement/trophy unlocks during the next cutscenes. "Man Could Never Again Misuse It" unlocks simultaneously for finishing the submarine chapter.
Cutscene: Lara again offers to aid the admiral in escaping but he refuses. He wants to die with honor, and he needs to manually release the pod, so Lara can live to tell his story.
Cinematics: Lara rides the escape pod to the surface where she is spotted by Jean-Yves. The admiral bravely goes down with his ship. Then we return to the present day, with Lara's old friends commenting on the stormy weather. This segues into the third episode, which involves young Lara's adventures with Father Dunstan on a mysterious island.

*NOTES ON PICKUPS, SECRETS, AND KILLS: There are 239 pickups and approximately 62 kills in the entire game. The total number of pickups includes 36 golden rose secrets. All pickups are required for the "Hoarding Order" achievement/trophy. Finding all secrets unlocks an achievement/trophy at the end of each level set (Rome, Russia, etc.) See the footnote following the STREETS OF ROME walkthrough for details on how these statistics are tracked in-game and in this walkthrough.
