Stella's Tomb Raider Chronicles Walkthrough

NOTES ON THE REMASTER: I have attempted to provide running kill, item, and secret counts. (Details are in a footnote following the first-level walkthrough.) I have also tried to cover all achievements/trophies, except New Game+. These guides are based on classic tank controls, but I hope they will be useful for those using modern controls. Follow this link for the archived classic guide. Chronicles does not include a "Restart Level" option, so I recommend making a new save at the beginning of each level in case you need to replay. Follow this link for Steam/GOG save files.

Chronicles Remastered Video Walkthrough by Eldincy

Pickups: 36, including Laser Sight, Crowbar, Shotgun, Golden Coin, Valve Wheel, Mars Symbol, Venus Symbol, and 3 Golden Rose Secrets*
Kills: 2

COBBLED STREET AND ABANDONED BUILDINGS: Enter the first two rooms on either side of the street. Each contains some tools, a wheelbarrow, etc., and a small box. Shatter the boxes with your pistols and pick up a LASER SIGHT (1) (34/239), yet again, and a CROWBAR (2) (35/239). Both rooms have enticing ledges above. You can't reach them yet, though. (screenshots)

Continue along the street. The second door on the left, with the "Pericolo" (Danger) sign, doesn't open. You'll be able to reach the ammo inside later from behind. For now, approach the corrugated metal door third on the right, which is also marked "Pericolo." Press Action to pry it open with the CROWBAR. (screenshots)

Enter, crouch, and shoot the little box to get the small medipack (3) (36/239) inside. Climb onto the scaffolding, then the stone wall above. Turn around and pull up onto the metal box where the tightrope is anchored. Before using the tightrope, walk carefully to the corner of the box nearest the windowsill with the small medipack (4) (37/239). Take a standing jump from the box and grab the sill. Pull up, take the health pack, then turn around and take a carefully angled standing jump back down to the metal box. (screenshots)

Walk the tightrope to the other side of the room. (Check the tutorial if you need a refresher on tightrope mechanics. And ignore the shotgun shells on the middle windowsill for now.) Jump onto the L-shaped corner ledge. Climb into the opening on the right. Cross the metal walkway above the street where you started. Turn right and take a standing jump to the angled ledge, then another standing jump to the metal ledge beyond. Turn right and take a running jump to grab the sill with the shotgun shells (5) (38/239) you saw earlier. Pull up, take the ammo, then repeat the running jump-and-grab to get back to the metal ledge. (screenshots)

Safety drop into the next room (i.e., hang from the doorway and drop onto the ledge below). Pick up flares and the revolver ammo (6-7) (39-40/239) you glimpsed from the street earlier. Stand on top of the rubble heap where the flares were, walk to the edge of the flat area, and take a standing jump to grab the square corner ledge. Pull up and enter the next room. (screenshots)

Cutscene: An array of gears.

ROPE AND GEAR ROOMS: Drop down into an enclosed area with various ledges and doorways. Move out into the open and head to the right. Continue past a doorway with a ramp inside. (We'll return there shortly.) Climb the ladder on the back of the square pillar just beyond that doorway. At the top, climb around the corner to the left, let go, and slide onto the flat part of the ledge. (screenshots)

Turn right (so the ladder is on Lara's left) and take a running jump to the next ledge. Jump past the square pillar on the left onto the ornately tiled ledge beyond it. (Or carefully run across at the corner, where the gap is smallest.) Enter the FIRST ROPE ROOM and pull the vertical rope once (stand facing it and press Action) to operate the gear mechanism. (screenshots)

Cutscene: One of the huge gears rises to connect with another.

Exit the rope room and return to the ledge just ahead on the right. (Either run across the gap at the corner or jump onto the slope and slide onto the ledge.) Then take a running jump back to the uneven middle ledge (near the ladder). Next, you're headed for the windowsill with the Uzi ammo, ahead on the right, between the two carved gryphons. To nail this tricky jump, walk Lara into the corner nearest that windowsill and pivot so she's facing it squarely. Hop back once. Then hold Walk and take an additional step back. Now, when you take a running jump, Lara will clear the slope below the ladder, sail through the air, and land in the opening. (You don't have to hold Action during this jump, but it doesn't hurt.) Pick up the Uzi ammo (8) (41/239), but don't drop down. (screenshots)

Turn around and take a running jump from the window to the next ledge, ahead on the right. Jump around the square pillar (or run across at the corner) onto the small, ornately tiled ledge, and enter the SECOND ROPE ROOM. Pull the rope once. If you've already used the rope in the FIRST ROPE ROOM (above), the machine begins to move. (screenshots)

Cutscene: The gears turn, and the huge, circular door rolls aside, revealing a bronze-armored centurion statue.

NOTE: Until you use the first rope, pulling the second rope will have no effect. So if you missed the first rope, make your way across the ledges to the other corner room. (screenshot) Use the rope there. Then return to the second rope and use it to open the big, round door.

FIRST SECRET: Pulling the second rope also opens a trapdoor below, leading to a secret room. The trapdoor is visible from the entrance to the SECOND ROPE ROOM. It is just below the entrance from the ABANDONED BUILDINGS. (screenshots)

NOTE: If, after pulling the second rope once, you pull it again, the trapdoor will close. Pull the rope again to re-open it.

Hang and drop from the SECOND ROPE ROOM doorway to the ground. (Lara loses a tiny bit of health.) Turn around and go straight across the open area (over or around the low railing) and drop through the trapdoor. Collect a golden rose (9) (SECRET #1) (item 42/239 and secret 4/36), plus wideshot and regular shotgun ammo (10-11) (43-44/239). Climb back out. (screenshots)

BEHIND THE ROUND DOOR: Cross the open area and go through the middle doorway. At the top of the first ramp, you'll see where the huge door rolled aside to the right. On the left is a raised opening. Climb up and drop into a small room with lit torches. If you're after the "Tail Innocence" achievement/trophy, quick-save before proceeding. You will need to avoid taking damage from the next rat swarm. (screenshots)

Use the CROWBAR to pry out the GOLDEN COIN (12) (45/239). When you do, rats swarm out from behind the grate. Immediately roll, run forward, veering slightly left, and jump up to grab the edge of the raised opening. Hang near the middle of the ledge while the rats swarm around you. (You may have better luck if you traverse to the left side of the opening and hang there. I didn't notice much difference.) Most of the time, the rats will do no damage, but watch carefully, and if the health bar flashes on screen, it means Lara has been bitten. If you want the achievement, reload and try again. (screenshots)

When the rats disperse, climb back up and drop down into the hallway with the ramps. Go through the doorway on the left. Pick up a small medipack and revolver bullets (13-14) (46-47/239). Then place the GOLDEN COIN in the receptacle in the base of the statue. (screenshots)

Cutscene: A gate opens elsewhere.

Return down the ramps and proceed directly across the courtyard through the gate that just opened. This leads back out to the COBBLED STREET at the beginning of the level. Now the first small gate in the white stone wall on the left is also open. Go through and follow the alley forward and around the next corner. On the left is a pool and a doorway resembling a face with a huge open mouth. Pass by for now and continue to the end of the street, where you'll find some revolver ammo (15) (48/239). (screenshots)

ROOM WITH POOL AND FALLING WATER: Backtrack to the pool you passed a moment ago and take a swim. Pick up a small medipack (16) (49/239) on the bottom of the pool on the left side. (Notice the VENUS SYMBOL on the other side of the bars? You'll reach it soon.) Surface behind the falling water and climb out on the wide ledge. Go through the doorway and pick up the revolver ammo (17) (50/239) lying on the floor to the right. (screenshots)

Cutscene: A machine clanks to life, activating a huge mechanical head hovering above a claw-like base.

FLOATING MECHANICAL HEAD: The mechanical head (not counted as a kill) shoots deadly rays from its eyes. If Lara is hit, it means instant death. Destroying the head requires you to shoot both of its eyes using the revolver equipped with the laser sight. To unlock the "Mars Is Attacked!" achievement/trophy, you must do this in two consecutive shots, without exiting laser-sight view.

Lara is safe until she steps onto the tile in the doorway. So position her just outside the doorway, with her back to the wall, and the opening ahead and to her right. Equip the revolver combined with the laser sight. Sidestep toward the doorway tile, but not onto it. If you can see the boss health bar, that means the head can target Lara. Step back to the left a little. Quick-save. (screenshots)

NOTE: If you don't see the boss health bar, check that 'Boss HP bars' is set to 'on' in the Options menu. Review the laser-sight controls in the STREETS OF ROME walkthrough if necessary. If the Duck/Dash controls feel awkward for zooming, change them temporarily under Options > Control > Change Controls.

Now sidestep to the right, into the doorway. Quickly press Look to enter laser-sight view. Zoom in (Duck/Crouch) then aim at either eye. Fire once. When you shot connects, the eye shatters. Shift your aim horizontally toward the other eye, then wait for the head to float into position and fire once more. It sounds simple, but it will probably take several attempts. When you shatter both eyes, with two consecutive shots, the head is destroyed, and the achievement/trophy pops. (screenshots)

Alternatively, if you don't care about achievements, you can step out, press Look to activate the laser sight, shoot one eye, release Look, step back into cover, and repeat. Or, run into the room beyond the head and shoot from there. The section with screenshots includes additional details.

When the head explodes, retrieve the MARS SYMBOL (18) (51/239) left in its place. (screenshots)

ROOM WITH RED MACHINE AND PIPES: Enter the small side room with the red machine. (You will already be here if you used the alternate method for destroying the head, above.) The machine has an empty stem where a wheel would fit, but you don't have one yet. Climb onto either of the blocks flanking the doorway. Walk to the edge nearest the machine. Jump straight up and grab the metal structure overhead. Pull up. (It's dark in here, so light a flare if necessary.) Jump onto the machine. Here you'll find a golden rose (19) (52/239) (SECRET #2, 5/36). Drop down and return to the room where the head was. (screenshots)

On the opposite side of the room, below and to the left of the entrance, pick up some revolver bullets (20) (53/239). Then stand at the edge of the nearby manhole cover and press Action to open it. (screenshots)

SEWERS: Drop through the hole and follow the short passage to a T-shaped pool. One of the semi-circular grates (the one in the far right corner relative to the entrance) releases a swarm of rats when Lara walks past, but you can avoid it easily. If you're going for the "Tail Innocence" achievement/trophy, you do not have to spawn the rats and outrun them. Just avoid that ledge completely. If you do accidentally trigger the rats, jump in the water and swim to the bottom. The rats stay on the surface, so they can't bite Lara. They should disperse before you run out of air. (screenshots)

At the junction of the "T" there's an underwater fan. It's not dangerous, but it does prevent you from swimming to the bottom of the vertical shaft. Swim into the wide, rectangular alcove just above the vertical shaft and pick up a small medipack (21) (54/239). Return to the junction. Note the two openings on the side walls of the shaft that leads down to the fan. The current prevents you from reaching the lower opening. Take a breath. Then swim through the upper opening. Follow the short but twisty passage to a SMALL ROOM WITH A PIPE AND LIT TORCH. (screenshots)

Grab some shotgun shells (22) (55/239) and use your CROWBAR to pry the VALVE WHEEL (23) (56/239) off the pipe. Swim back to the T-shaped pool. Climb out of the water and return through the short passageway to the ladder. Climb through the open manhole into the room where you destroyed the mechanical head. Cross the lower level into the the ROOM WITH THE RED MACHINE. (screenshots)

Press Action to place the VALVE WHEEL on the stem protruding from the red machine. Press Action again to turn the wheel. There's no cutscene, but this turns off the fan back in the SEWERS. Return through the manhole to the SEWERS. (screenshots)

UNDERWATER TUNNELS: Swim down through the opening just above the now-inactive fan. Continue down and forward. At the bottom, the passage widens. Go through through the square opening ahead on the left. Continue to a small room where you can get air and a large medipack (24) (57/239). (screenshots)

Jump back in the water and follow the narrow passageway. When you reach the wider, hexagonal tunnel, turn left. Follow the wide tunnel forward, then right. Ignore the next small opening on the right. Ahead, on the left wall, are two large fans. There's a small, square opening just beyond the fans, but the current prevents you from reaching it. Swim in front of the fans and let the current carry you to the right. When you reach the wall opposite the fans, swim up through the opening in the ceiling. Continue upward until you can surface. Climb out of the water in a small room with a SECOND RED MACHINE. Turn the wheel to deactivate the fans and open a gate elsewhere. (Again, there's no cutscene showing this.) (screenshots)

Swim back down toward the fans, then through the small, square opening to the right of them. Follow this passage through a series of twists and turns, always upward, to another pool where you can surface. Climb out of the water and pick up the SHOTGUN and some normal shotgun shells (25-26) (58-59/239). (Insert meme about finding lots of goodies just before a big fight. Don't stress, though. You've got this.) When Lara approaches the gun, the gate closes behind her. Save the game, then start forward. (screenshots)

Cutscene: A statue of a Roman centurion comes to life.

ANIMATED STATUE: The mechanical centurion (1) (6/62) is large and aggressive. His sword not only slices but also shoots energy bolts. You can run around him and jump up onto the shelf where he started. He can't reach Lara with his sword there, but he can still zap her. Occasionally you'll get lucky, and he'll get stuck in a position where the lightning bolts won't land. But this is unusual. You can also stand in one corner of the shelf, target him with pistols or shotgun, and flip side to side while firing. If you do this, you can mostly avoid the lightning. But with the camera pointing at Lara instead of behind her, the left and right controls are reversed, so this can be awkward. (screenshots)

I found it easier to run past him and to the left, into the open room. Then just keep moving around the open area while blasting him with the shotgun. Or, get a lock with pistols and fire continuously while flipping from side to side. He'll start to deteriorate as he takes damage. Then eventually he'll collapse. (There are a few additional suggestions on the page with screenshots.)

Cutscene: When the statue falls, the window shatters, and the gate in the ROOM WITH THE POOL AND FALLING WATER opens, so the VENUS SYMBOL is accessible.

Climb onto the ledge below the window and pick up a small medipack and Uzi ammo (27-28) (60-61/239). Climb through the broken window and get another small medipack (29) (62/239) at the left end of the ledge. Drop down to the street. (screenshots)

The ROOM WITH THE POOL AND FALLING WATER is right here. But before going for a swim, return to the start of the level for a secret. To get there, turn so the pool is on Lara's right. Follow the street forward, around the corner to the left, and through the open gate just beyond the single palm tree. Outside the gate, turn left and follow the white stone wall to the end. (The ABANDONED BUILDINGS you explored at the beginning of the level are off to the right). The gate at the far end of the white stone wall is now open. Inside you'll find a golden rose (30) (63/239) (SECRET #3, 6/36). (screenshots)

Return to the ROOM WITH THE POOL AND FALLING WATER. Swim down and forward, then through the gate on the left, which is now open. Pick up the VENUS SYMBOL (31) (64/239) and swim straight on to the next room. Save the game. Then pull up into the doorway. (screenshots)

Cutscene: Lara ambushes Larson, who is attempting to ambush her in the gargoyle garden. (You probably remember this place from the first level.)

GARDEN WITH GARGOYLES: As soon as the cutscene ends, draw pistols, run forward, face Larson (2) (7/62), and start shooting. Larson stays in one place, in front of the gargoyle gate. So if you side flip back and forth while firing, Lara will take little or no damage, and he should go down fairly quickly. (Or, if you prefer, four shotgun blasts at medium-close range should take care of him.) When he falls, there's a short pause before the next cutscene starts. Heal if necessary, but unless you're desperate for shotgun ammo, there's no need to rush around collecting the last few items. You can use pistols in the next fight, and there will be time for pickups afterwards. (screenshots)

Cutscene: Lara tries to warn Larson about the gargoyles, but he's too smart to fall for her tricks. The gargoyles, however, are just a little smarter. One of them chomps on Larson and tosses him aside. Then all three focus on Lara.

NOTES: The shotgun does more damage than the pistols, obviously, but it's easier to do the side flips with pistols and not waste ammo. In the remaster, the gargoyles have three separate health bars, and sometimes these go gray, which I assume means you can't hit them at that point. The mechanics of this are a little fuzzy though. I did not notice any difference between holding Action to shoot continuously and occasionally releasing and re-pressing Action to change targets. If you've discovered any tricks, I'd love to hear them.

When you've destroyed all three gargoyles, go after the final pickups: a large medipack (32) (65/239), 2 boxes of regular shotgun shells and 2 boxes of wideshot shells (33-36) (66-69/239) on the ground in front of and behind the gargoyle building. (screenshots)

Place the VENUS and MARS SYMBOLS in their receptacles to open the gate. Make sure you have everything because once you pass through the doorway, a sparkly force field prevents you from returning to the garden. Take a running jump over the spike pit to grab the ledge in the middle of the cave. Pull up and take another running jump to the ledge near the fabled PHILOSOPHER'S STONE. In typical Tomb Raider style, the ledge collapses before Lara can take the stone, and she slides into the next level. (screenshots)
