STELLA'S TOMB RAIDER 2 REMASTERED WALKTHROUGH

LOOKING FOR DARK MODE?

The TR2 Remastered guide is now complete. For the guides that have not yet been updated, I will continue to link to the ORIGINAL WALKTHROUGHS, which cover all the basics. Please check the introductory notes at the start of the first level for info on my process, modern vs. classic tank controls, etc. This guide covers most but not all possible achievements/trophies. Follow this link for the archived classic guide.

LEVEL 3: BARTOLI'S HIDEOUT (Remaster)

Updated: 8/1/26()

Pickups: 28, including Uzis, 2 keys, and 3 secrets
Kills: 37

NOTE: The number of pickups includes the three dragon statuettes and the bonus items awarded for finding all three secrets. See the footnote following the first level for details on how kills, pickups, and the related achievements/trophies are tracked. Also, the regular pickups in this level will include the AUTOMATIC PISTOLS if you didn't get them earlier.

Bartoli's Hideout Video Walkthrough by Eldincy

OBJECTIVES: Get inside Bartoli's villa and make your way through the building to the ballroom. Here you'll find the Library Key and the secret entrance to the Library, located in the flooded basement. Go through the library to the boathouse to find another key that will enable you to reach the next level.

CANAL OUTSIDE BARTOLI'S VILLA: You start this level in your boat in a dark enclosure. Proceed straight ahead. The gate opens automatically. Pull up near the big doors on the left, hop out, and shoot 2 rats (1-2). And just like that, your boating days are over...sigh! (screenshots)

REMINDER: Avoid being bitten by rats throughout the Venice levels for the "No Time for the Plague" achievement/trophy.

Climb the wooden stairs to the left. Draw pistols and shoot 2 more rats (3-4) that appear as you turn the corner. As you start up the narrow, dark staircase, a thug with a club (5) comes down toward you. Kill him and take his large medi pack (1). Continue up the steps. There's another rat (6) on the ledge above. You can kill it easily by jumping in place while firing. Vault onto the ledge, step forward, and shoot another rat (7) that spawns ahead on the right. Flip the switch to open the big doors in front of the villa. Another bad guy with a baton (8) comes out. If you move forward to the edge of the wooden ledge, you can fire at him as he approaches. Unlike dogs and rats, he can climb, though, so hop back from the edge when he gets close. Grab the small medi pack (2) he drops. Then return down the stairs and enter the villa with weapons ready. (screenshots)

NOTE: You may notice footsteps as you explore this area. There's a sniper (13, below) on one of the balconies above the front entrance. (screenshot) You may be able to shoot him from below, but he has a better angle. So avoid him for now.

THE VILLA - ENTRANCE HALL: Two gun-toting thugs (9-10) greet you. One is on the balcony above on the right; the other emerges from behind the pillars. You can trigger them one at a time by advancing no farther than the open doors to spawn the enemy on the balcony. Deal with him, then move farther in to draw out the other. Take the shotgun shells (3) from the one at ground level. You'll have a chance to search the other in a few minutes. (screenshots)

Go to the blue-curtained windows on the left side of the room. Shatter one with your pistols and kill the 2 DobermansDobermen?—(11-12) that charge out. Step through the window into a glass-ceilinged sunroom. Run to the right end to find a pile of goodies: a small medi pack, flares, and automatic pistol clips (4-6). (If you didn't pick up the AUTOMATIC PISTOLS in the previous level, you'll get them here instead of ammo.) (screenshots)

Return through the broken window and turn left. Several mechanical guards with hacking swords block your way. To get past them with little or no damage, stand close to the first sword but not too close. Then run past as it rises. Repeat for the other two. Flip the switch in the brick-walled room at the end of the passageway to open some doors outside. Now, return past the statues, which are no longer active, to the ENTRANCE HALL. (screenshots)

The BACK DOOR, which you just opened, is high above water level. So you can't climb in from below. You'll have to take a roundabout route. There are two possibilities: One involves acrobatics and block pushing. But we'll take a shortcut and unlock an achievement/trophy in the process. "Pollen Allergy" requires that you don't move the flower block (i.e., the movable block on the upper level of the ENTRANCE HALL). (screenshots)

To reach the balcony without moving the block, stand under the climbable wall with the horizontal slats, located between the front doors and the balcony, and jump straight up to grab it. If you're having trouble, position Lara on or just before the seam between the floor tiles below the spot you want to grab. Then hold Action + Jump and she'll gradually hop her way forward until she's able to grab. Scale the climbable wall upward then left. Drop onto the balcony and relieve the dead guy of some auto pistol clips (7). (screenshots)

NOTE: The "Pollen Allergy" achievement/trophy doesn't register until you complete the level. Refer to the archived classic guide of you want to do it the old-fashioned way, with no achievement.

Now use the climbable wall to reach the high doorway leading out onto a balcony above the canal. Ready weapons and step outside. A sniper (13) starts taking potshots from the balcony on the right. Kill him. You can't reach his balcony from here, but we'll soon make our way around through the building. (screenshots)

BACK DOOR: Turn around and move to the end of the balcony with no railing. If you look down the canal to the left, you'll see where you're headed. Start by taking a running jump onto the red awning on the other side of the canal. Slide back, grab the edge, and hang on. Traverse to the left end of the awning. Pull up and immediately press Jump to backflip onto the balcony behind you. Take a running jump from this balcony to grab the small wooden platform jutting out of the wall ahead. Pull up. Then jump to the red awning on the other side of the canal, which is flat enough to stand on. Turn around, walk to the lower edge, and take a standing jump into the doorway below, holding Action so Lara sails into the opening. (If you don't hold Action, she'll bang her head and fall into the canal. Then you'll have to reload or swim back around to the front door and try the whole sequence again.) (screenshots)

As soon as you enter, 2 Dobermans (14-15) rush down the dark stairway, so ready weapons and take care of them. Continue to the top of the stairs and approach the open doorway on the right. A masked thug with a gun (16) emerges. Kill him and go into the room he came from. Turn around and locate the switch on the wall to the right of the entrance. (This switch is well camouflaged by the busy wallpaper.) Pull it to open the door at the top of the stairs. Exit this room, turn right, and you'll see that door just ahead. Go out onto the balcony, where you'll find the sniper you shot from the other balcony earlier. Take his shotgun shells (8) and SECRET #1, the Silver Dragon (9). (screenshots)

Return to the room with the switch and the floral wallpaper. Another of Bartoli's henchmen (17) is patrolling the balcony outside. Shoot out the window, climb up, and take care of him. Relieve him of 2 sets of Uzi clips (10-11) then move to the other end of the balcony. Shatter the window here and enter. A goon with a club and a dog (18-19) come through the doors on the right when you hit the floor. Another enemy with a bat (20) enters through the window behind you. There's plenty of room to jump and dodge as you shoot. There's also a cloth-covered ledge on the right, where the dog can't reach you, but the men can climb as well as Lara can. If you're struggling, you may want to switch to the shotgun. Run forward and take out the first man (two shotgun blasts) and dog (one more). Then roll and finish off the other man (two more blasts). (screenshots)

SHORTCUT: You can take a substantial shortcut here, which will bring you nearly to the end of the level. If you do, you'll miss a secret and quite a few pickups. Use it at your discretion. Details are in a footnote.

SECRET PASSAGEWAY: Continuing along the normal route, locate the movable block at the back of the fireplace. Push it twice then climb into the passageway above. Kill the rat (21) lurking there ((avoid being bitten for the "Plague" achievement/trophy) and continue forward. (screenshots)

FLOODED ROOM WITH BLADES AND FLAME TRAP: At the end of the passage is a slope with blades at both ends, as well as a fire trap and a pool of water below. (screenshots)

You may be able to avoid these traps altogether. Begin by stepping back a little from the top of the slope. Then pivot slightly to the right and take a standing jump over the first blade, avoiding the slope completely and landing in the pool. Swim underneath the flame traps and surface in front of the last flame jet. (Ignore the trapdoor on the bottom of the pool for now. You'll return later.) Save the game, just in case the next step doesn't work. Pull up in the middle of the ledge and run through the fire. I don't know if this is a bug, or if Lara's wetness protects her, but as long as you move quickly through middle of the flame, she should be fine. If you try and run through on either side, Lara always seems to catch fire. Also, if you try and go back through the flame toward the pool, Lara catches fire. (screenshots)

If this glitch doesn't work for you, try navigating the trap as the designers probably intended: Walk to the top of the slope. Hop back once. Take a standing jump over the first blade to land on the slope. Then jump again to clear the second blade. Walk carefully toward the first flame jet. The flames are on a timer. When you step on the wooden tile, they go out. But once Lara steps off the wood, the flames relight after a few seconds. To get through quickly, start by positioning Lara on the edge of the wooden tile farthest from the flames. Press Look and check your angle. Make sure Lara is facing straight ahead along the middle of the gas jets. Save the game if you like. Now take a quick series of standing jumps (i.e., press and immediately release Jump + Forward together to hop forward without running). If you take one quick forward hop after another, you should be able to clear the flames before they reignite. If Lara catches fire, either reload or drop into the water, swim back to the beginning, and try again. (screenshots)

BALLROOM: Once you've cleared the fire trap, turn right. The door ahead opens automatically. A thug with a gun and 2 more Dobermans (22-24) are waiting in the room below. You can kill them from the doorway if you like. (screenshots)

NOTE: If you're going for 100%, you may want to read ahead. The achievement/trophy "Moving Doesn't Change Who You Are" requires you to obtain the Library Key without moving the chandeliers. This isn't difficult to do, but it's easy to miss.

When the coast is clear, hop down into the BALLROOM and climb onto the first angled block. Stand at the higher edge, jump straight up, and grab the chandelier above. Pull up. Turn around and take a running jump to grab the middle chandelier; pull up. Turn right and take a running jump onto the wooden ledge against the wall. Throw the switch to open a secret compartment behind a painting on the opposite side of the room. (screenshots)

Do another running jump back to the middle chandelier. Turn right and take a running jump to grab the highest chandelier; pull up. Now you're aiming for the windowsill just above the secret compartment. Take a running jump in that direction and hold Action in the air. Lara won't grab the sill, but grabbing alters her trajectory so she lands on the windowsill. Hang from the edge above the secret compartment. Let go. Then quickly press and hold Action again to grab the edge below. Pull up into the alcove and take the LIBRARY KEY (12). "Moving Doesn't Change Who You Are" should unlock, assuming you haven't already explored the room and rearranged the chandeliers. (screenshots)

BALLROOM - CLIMBING INTO THE RAFTERS: Drop to the floor, return to the angled block near the entrance, and pull up onto the first chandelier once more. Take a running jump and grab the middle chandelier; pull up. Repeat to get to the third chandelier, just like you did before. This time, walk to the far edge and pull up onto the wooden ledge above. Draw pistols, turn right, and shoot 2 rats (25-26) lurking near the square, brick pillar. Then go around behind the pillar and walk out onto the brick ledge. Step to the edge and jump straight up to grab the big, wooden beam. Traverse to the right until Lara can pull up. (screenshots)

Stand with the thick, vertical support on Lara's right, walk to the edge and jump across the gap to land on the wooden ledge below. When you advance, a thug with a club (27) jumps out from behind the low brick wall, so be ready for him. To prevent him from pushing Lara off the edge, you can wait for him to climb over the wall, then jump onto it, hop down on the other side, roll, and shoot him. If he gets too close, roll again and back away firing. He drops a small medi pack (13). (screenshots)

Climb onto the brick wall, walk to the end, and jump over to the wooden beam, this time to the left of the vertical support. Pull the switch to change the height of the chandeliers. Jump back down onto the brick wall. Step forward. Turn so the vertical chain is behind Lara. Then safety drop onto the first chandelier, which is now the highest. (screenshots)

Walk to the edge nearest the middle chandelier and take a standing jump to land on it. Turn left and take a carefully angled running jump to the right side of the nearby windowsill. Pull the switch to open a trapdoor in the fireplace below. Shoot out one of the windows near the switch and step out onto a ledge overlooking the canal. Follow this ledge to the end, where there's an opening in the back of the chimney. Safety drop down the chimney into the pool below, taking no damage from the burning fireplace. (screenshots)

NOTE: If you fall (or deliberately drop) into the canal outside the BALLROOM, it's possible to explore and find some goodies, but you won't be able to reach the LIBRARY ENTRANCE. Scale the climbable wall to get back into the BALLROOM. (screenshot) Climb up to the middle chandelier, jump back to the windowsill with the switch, and use it to open the trapdoor in the fireplace if you didn't do so before. Then follow the outside ledge and drop down the chimney, as described above. The route shown in this walkthrough gets all the pickups here, just a little later.

DARK, FLOODED ROOM NEAR LIBRARY ENTRANCE: The books on the landing show you've found the LIBRARY. But before going in, lets find a secret. Pull the underwater lever, which is on the left just below the surface when facing the Library doors. This opens a small door to the right of the lever. (screenshots)

UNDERWATER ROOMS AND GOLD DRAGON: The next sequence involves swimming through a dark labyrinth. It's not a huge area, but it's easy to get turned around and drown, so be sure to save the game first. Swim through the door you opened with the lever. Take a breath, light a flare, then swim down toward the far right corner of the room, where you'll see a submerged stairway. Swim straight down, beside the top step. Then roll to face away from the stairs. There are two openings just ahead. Swim forward through the one on the right. Stay close to the floor as you continue straight ahead through a second fairly large opening. Then veer to the left just a little and go through the small, rectangular opening near the floor. Head toward the far left corner of the room, where you'll find 2 pairs of grenades (14-15). Pick them up, turn right, swim straight across the room, and grab SECRET #2, the Gold Dragon (16), which is sitting on the floor in the corner. On the wall to the right of the dragon is a lever that opens a trapdoor directly above. Pull the lever and swim straight up to the surface. (Of course, if you're running out of air, you can pull the lever first, take a breath, then swim back down and pick up the goodies.) (screenshots)

NOTE: Each grenade pickup is actually a pair of grenades. If you don't yet have the GRENADE LAUNCHER, it's counted as '1' pair of grenades in your inventory. Once you obtain the weapon, the game starts counting individual grenades instead of pairs, so you'll get 4 grenades here. For details on how ammo is tracked in your inventory, see the TR2 Controls page.

After pulling the lever and swimming up the vertical shaft, you wind up back in the FLOODED ROOM WITH BLADES AND FLAME TRAP. To return to the LIBRARY, swim back down the shaft and through the flooded rooms to the library entrance. (The page with screenshots shows the way.)

NOTE: If you missed the LIBRARY KEY, you'll have to backtrack for it now. Details are in a footnote.

THE LIBRARY: Use the LIBRARY KEY in the keyhole to unlock the door. Enter with guns drawn. The doors close behind you, and a thug with a club (28) comes out of the room ahead. If you run forward, get a lock on him, and back away shooting, you should be able to take him down before he reaches Lara. Take the small medi pack (17) he's carrying. Then enter the room he came from. Head to the back of the room and climb the bookshelf farthest from the entrance. Turn around and shoot 2 rats (29-30) across the gap. (This way they can't reach Lara.) Jump across the gap, climb onto the low shelf, and flip the switch, which opens one set of doors back in the main room. A bad guy (31) with a gun comes out, so go down to meet him. (screenshots)

When he's dead, go into the room from which he came. Grab onto the shelves to the left of the door, climb almost to the top and then press Jump to backflip onto the wooden ledge behind. Here there are two windows, one above and one below. Climb on top of the shelf next to the windows and hop onto the higher windowsill. Shoot out the windowpane and walk out onto the sill. Turn around, slide backward down the red awning, and grab the edge. Pull up and quickly backflip onto the small balcony behind you. Don't drop down yet. We're going on an adventure. (screenshots)

BOATHOUSE & HIDDEN UZIS: Take a running jump from the small balcony to the orange-tiled roof below the awning. Then jump onto the brick wall. From here, you can see a wooden BOATHOUSE across the canal. Walk along the brick wall to the right end, where it slopes upward slightly. Stand at the highest point and take a running jump across the canal to grab the edge of the BOATHOUSE roof at the right end, near where it meets the wall. Pull up and head for the back of the roof. Stand just to the left of the metal chimney and take a standing jump with Action onto the brick wall with the curved ceiling above. (Pressing Action lowers Lara's arc so she lands on the wall, rather than banging her head and falling into the canal.) Drop down behind the wall into knee-deep water. On the floor are the UZIS (18). This isn't an official secret, but finding the guns unlocks the "Bartoli Stash" achievement/trophy. (screenshots)

NOTE: If you miss any of the jumps and fall into the canal before getting the Uzis, either reload an earlier save, or continue following the main walkthrough. Then, when you get back inside the LIBRARY, climb the bookshelves to the high window with the red awning and try the whole thing again.

DETONATOR KEY: Once you have the Uzis, climb the ladder to get out of the flooded area and hop down onto the wooden walkway. Go around to the front of the BOATHOUSE. Enter and kill the armed guard (32). Grab his automatic pistol ammo (19) and the DETONATOR KEY (20) on the table. (screenshots)

Cross the canal to the garden door, either by swimming or by taking a running jump from the wooden dock and holding Action to land in the doorway. The door opens automatically, and a thug with a gun (33) is waiting on the other side. Run/jump past him, roll, and take him out, flipping from side to side so Lara is harder to hit. Steal his large medi pack (21). Then shoot out a window and re-enter the LIBRARY. (screenshots)

LIBRARY (again): Return past the bookshelves to the main room and pull the switch to open the remaining set of double doors. There are 2 thugs with guns (34-35) in the garden outside. When you enter the room, you can see (and target) them through the windows. These two can be tough to beat, so go ahead and break out your more powerful weapons. Keep jumping and dodging as you fight. Also, be sure to briefly release and re-press Action to change targets if Lara is auto-aiming at the wrong enemy. Afterwards, take their shotgun shells and Uzi ammo (22-23). (screenshots)

ABANDONED BUILDING: In the garden with the gazebo, where the two thugs came from, is a door that opens automatically when you approach. Jump into the canal and swim to the far left corner. Climb out on the low ledge. Then quickly climb onto the brick ledge on the left before the rat (36) on the lower ledge can bite Lara. Shoot it from above. Then head to the other end of the ledge. Do not use the detonator plunger yet or you will not be able to get the last secret. (screenshots)

Instead, climb onto the garden wall and follow it to the far end. Vault onto the brick ledge and pull up onto the roof. Shoot out one of the windows and go inside to find SECRET #3, the Jade Dragon (24), plus 4 boxes of shotgun shells (25-28) if you've found all three secrets. (screenshots)

SECOND SHORTCUT: After obtaining the Jade Dragon, if you don't mind missing one kill and a medium-sized explosion, you can take a shortcut to the end of the level. Details are in a footnote.

THE DETONATOR: To get that last kill, you'll need to blow up the abandoned building where you found the secret. Return to the detonator plunger at the other end of this area and use the DETONATOR KEY to set off an explosion. A sniper (37) begins firing from the balcony above on the left. To take him out without losing too much health, run to the left end of the detonator ledge and take cover beneath the overhang. With Lara's back against the long wall, sidestep out to the right with pistols drawn. If you move carefully, you can get a lock on the sniper before he can target Lara. As long as you still have a little health after this encounter, don't waste a medipack. Lara's health will be restored at the end of the level. (screenshots)

NOTE: If you missed the DETONATOR KEY, either take the shortcut described below or backtrack to get the key. Again, check the footnote for specifics.

CLIMBING TO THE EXIT: When the sniper is dead, swim or follow the garden wall to the ruined building. Climb to the top. (The screenshots show one possible path.) Don't bother crossing over to the sniper since he's not carrying any goodies. When you reach the top left corner of the ruined building, follow the brick pathway across to the right corner. Drop into the dark passageway, follow it to the end, and slide down the long slope into the next level.

NOTE: If you didn't move the flower block back in the entrance hall of Bartoli's villa (above), the "Pollen Allergy" achievement/trophy should pop on the statistics screen. There are more rats in the next level, so you'll have to wait for "No Time For the Plague."

UPDATE HISTORY: Updates made prior to the Tomb Raider I-II-III Remastered release, including credit for tips sent in by other players, are tracked in the archived classic guide.
8/1/26 - Remastered guide posted. Better late than never. :D

SHORTCUT FROM VILLA TO BOATHOUSE AND UZIS: By using the fence bug, you can skip from the balcony outside the room with the switch and floral wallpaper (in the BACK DOOR area) directly to the hidden Uzis behind the BOATHOUSE. Details are on a separate page with screenshots. Combining this route with the second shortcut, from the Jade Dragon to the level exit, helps if you're trying to finish the game in less than 6 hours for the achievement/trophy "I Only Play for Sport! Still!"

BACKTRACKING FOR THE LIBRARY KEY: If you reach the entrance to the LIBRARY and are missing the key, drop into the water, swim through the small door next to the lever into the other side of the room. Turn left and swim through the three broken windows into the canal outside. Turn left, swim past the two red-and-white-striped poles, and you'll see a climbable wall to your left. (screenshot) Climb up, re-enter the BALLROOM, and follow the walkthrough above to obtain the key.

SHORTCUT FROM JADE DRAGON TO LEVEL EXIT: Exit the secret room through either window, turn right and walk across the roof. At the corner, face the wall and press Forward + Action to pull up onto roof. Follow the brick pathway around to the back right corner. Drop into the dark passageway, head to the left, and slide down the long slope into the next level. (screenshots)

BACKTRACKING FOR THE DETONATOR KEY: If you reach detonator plunger but missed the key, drop into the water, climb out in the doorway that leads back into the little garden with the gazebo. Re-enter the LIBRARY through the windows. Cross the main room to the smaller room opposite, and exit through the windows on the right. Go through the other small garden and jump across the canal to the wooden BOATHOUSE. The key is inside, along with an armed guard (32).
