Stella's Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness Walkthrough

NOTES ON THE REMASTER: At this point I can't guarantee 100% accuracy for this guide. Updates are in progress but will take time. Levels that have been worked on will say "Remastered," rather than "Classic," in the title. In the meantime, I have attempted to provide a running count of all kills and pickups, including totals for health packs, chocolates, sellable items, and cash, as well as notebook entries, which are needed for some achievements/trophies. If I've missed any, I do apologize. Please let me know if you discover anything not mentioned here. Also, in case it's not obvious, these guides are based on classic tank controls, and I have not yet included strats for all achievements/trophies.

LEVEL 8: BOUCHARD'S HIDEOUT (Remaster)

Updated: 3/8/25()

LEVEL MAP by VGCartography (used with permission)*

Angel of Darkness Remastered Video Walkthrough by Eldincy

Items: 5, including 1 health item, wad of passports (see note)
Kills: 5 (optional)
Upgrades: none
Notebook Entries: 1

NOTE: There are 3 pickups in the ABANDONED MÉTRO TUNNELS, which are technically part of BOUCHARD'S HIDEOUT but are accessed through the manholes in the streets outside the SERPENT ROUGE nightclub. They are covered at the end of the PARISIAN GHETTO walkthrough. The 9 pickups obtained in RENNES' PAWNSHOP after speaking to Bouchard are noted below but numbered separately. There's also a minor glitch with the in-game item count, noted when you receive the passports (below).

TUNNELS: This is where you enter Bouchard's Hideout after pushing over the angel statue in ST. AICARD'S GRAVEYARD and dropping into the crypt. As soon as the level loads, a rat (1) approaches. Shoot it if you like. (screenshots)

NOTES: The "Let Pit Be" achievement/trophy requires you to avoid falling into the pits in the starting area. So you may want to save the game before proceeding. You'll encounter several rats in this area. Most don't bother Lara, so unless you want all kills, save your ammo and just continue on your way. Even with the laser sight (purchased from RENNES' PAWNSHOP) equipped, I was unable to target the rats from above. I had to climb/fall down to kill them. Occasionally, a rat will bite Lara, and she'll be poisoned. The health bar will turn green and begin to drain. (screenshot) Use an antidote from the Health section of your inventory (assuming you bought some from the WILLOWTREE HERBALIST) or use a large health pack for a full recovery. Smaller health items will restore Lara's health, but not cure the poison.

If Lara falls into one of the first two pits, either reload or kill the rats—assuming Lara will even target them—climb back out, and continue. The first pit has one root-covered wall Lara can climb. (screenshot) If you fall into the second pit, you may be able to stand on the rubble and jump up to grab the uneven ledge above (screenshot), but this is tricky. You can also crawl through the low tunnel to get back to the first pit, then climb the root-covered wall.

Continuing with the "Let Pit Be" challenge.... From the starting point, follow the tunnel away from the pile of rubble, past a door that doesn't open, toward the first bend in the passageway. Just beyond the first bend, run forward as the crumbling floor collapses beneath you. Then stop on the solid floor just before the next pit. There are 2 more rats (2-3) in the pits, one ahead, one behind. If you're going for the achievement/trophy, ignore them. Face the right wall, sidestep to the left, then jump straight up to grab the horizontal pipe. Traverse across the second pit. Lara should have just enough "grab" to make it across. (screenshots)

After clearing the second pit, you might want to save again. Walk forward toward the third pit. As you approach, the floor collapses. As long as you're holding Walk, Lara won't slide in. There's a crevice on the wall to the right, but it doesn't go all the way to the other side, so don't bother with it. Walk to the edge, jump forward, and grab the edge on the far side of the pit, and pull up near a fourth pit. (screenshots)

NOTE: If Lara falls into the third or fourth pit, reload. Or, if you don't care about the achievement/trophy, swim down through the jagged opening between the two pits. (Use Jump + directions to swim.) (screenshot) Surface, swim to the far side of the fourth pit, and climb out using the vine-covered wall on the right. Climb all the way up to the crack in the wall. When you've climbed up as far as you can, Lara will change position so her legs are dangling. You can then traverse to the left and drop onto the ledge. (screenshot)

Crossing the fourth pit is the trickiest, so definitely save the game. Jump straight up to grab the electrical cable that runs along above the pit. Traverse forward until Lara is hanging above the small, uneven slab of floor. Once you drop onto this slab, you'll need to react quickly before it collapses. The controls are super janky, so just do your best and reload if necessary. After letting go of the cable, walk one step forward, as the slab settles a little. Then immediately jump forward to land on the narrow, uneven ledge ahead. (Don't jump without first stepping forward, or Lara will grab the cable again, and you'll be stuck.) Once you reach the ledge, activate Walk so Lara doesn't fall. Turn right and quickly move to the end of the ledge, as it begins to crack beneath you. Then jump forward into the hallway. Don't linger on the cracked edge. Immediately move forward onto the solid floor. (screenshots)

NOTE: If you've cleared the four pits without falling in, the "Let Pit Be"achievement/trophy will unlock shortly, when you speak to Bouchard.

CAVE-IN AND BUNKER ENTRANCE: Continue along the passageway, shooting 2 rats (4-5) on the way. (Strange how Lara can subdue a big burly dude with her fists but won't stomp a tiny rodent.) Pull the large chunk of rubble to shift the pile blocking the passageway. You still can't get through there, but it opens the way on the other side. Kick open the grating nearby. Crawl through to the next room and pick up some Vector ammo (1). Go through the door, then a second door, to return to where you started. (The first pit is off to the right.) To the left is the same pile of rubble, only now you can get past it. (screenshots)

Proceed to another flooded pit. There's no way to avoid this one (and it doesn't affect the achievement/trophy), so jump in, swim across (use Jump plus directions to swim), and climb out on the far side (Action + Forward). (screenshots)

STORAGE CELLS: Enter a room with a bright light and some pipes. Make a U-turn to the right and exit through the hole in the wall into a storage area with a barred door and a few coffins. Go through the doorway on the left. In the next room you'll find a man covered in some hideous, metallic goo squirming on a cot. Next to him is a small medipack (2). Exit through the open cell door. Turn left and proceed through the metal door with the rivets at the end of the corridor. (screenshots)

BOUCHARD'S OFFICE: At last your hard work has paid off—an audience with the kingpin himself. Save the game, approach Bouchard, wait for him to stand, then speak to him. (screenshots)

Dialogue - Louis Bouchard: When choosing the first dialogue option, go for polite ("Easy, Bouchard..."). If you tell him not to jerk you around, he gets angry and it's lights out for our heroine. If you're going for the "Darwin Awards" achievement/trophy, you'll want to let this happen at least once, since this is one of several necessary deaths. If you navigated the pits at the beginning of the level without falling in, the "Let Pit Be" achievement/trophy unlocks here.

Bouchard refuses to say what happened to Arnaud, the guy in the next room. He claims not to know Eckhardt or Von Croy, but if you tell him you lost your friend yesterday and are now wanted for his murder, he'll be more forthcoming. You can go either way for the other dialogue choices, but you'll get a bit more information if you choose, "A front, obviously," and, "Passports!" The upshot is that Von Croy wanted weapons, maps and information on an archaeological dig beneath the Louvre. When Lara asks for the same, Bouchard says he can't help but he proposes a deal. If you carry a bunch of Czech passports to the pawnbroker, Daniel Rennes, he will know you've come from Bouchard and will sell you the stuff you need.

After this conversation, your notebook is updated (30/62): "Deliver passports to Daniel Rennes, pawnbroker - Rue St. Mark and Cours de la Seine," and you have a wad of passports (3) in your inventory. (Again, this page on Von Croy's Notebook list all entries.) (screenshots)

NOTE: The passports don't seem to register as a pickup on the in-game statistics screen. This appears to be a glitch. The 3 items you found in the ABANDONED MÉTRO TUNNELS also don't carry over, so after getting the next 2 pickups, you'll still finish the level with only 4 "official" pickups. (statistics)

Pull the lever in the corner to open one of the cell doors. Exit the office and search the cells. The first one on the left has Desert Ranger ammo (4) on the floor behind a coffin. The second cell on the left has a Vector clip (5) and a movable crate. Push/pull the box directly in front of the open door. Then use it to climb onto the ledge above the door. Use the lever to open the exit in Bouchard's office. Return to the office and exit through the door you just opened. (screenshots)

You emerge inside ST. AICARD'S CHURCH. If you haven't already been here, it's covered in the PARISIAN GHETTO walkthrough.

NOTE: Unless this is fixed in a future patch, when you return to ST. AICARD'S CHURCH and the PARISIAN GHETTO, all collectibles respawn so you can pick them up again. You won't need things like jewelry, since you can no longer pawn them, and you probably already have enough cash, but the health and ammo will certainly be useful. These pickups include all items in the church, the ABANDONED MÉTRO TUNNELS, the streets, and the starting area near the "City Guide."

Leave the church through the front door, which is in the black-and-white tiled entryway near where you exited Bouchard's Hideout. If you like, you can revisit the WILLOWTREE HERBALIST (screenshot) to stock up on antidotes and other health supplies. (Remember to save €800 for one more purchase in Prague.)

When you're ready to move on, return to RENNES' PAWNSHOP, in the southwest corner of the district, on the Cours de la Seine, just beyond where Janice is standing. (screenshots)

Cut scene: Lara encounters Eckhardt coming out of the shop, though she doesn't know him yet. She enters the shop to find it ransacked and places the passports on the counter.

RENNES' PAWNSHOP: Go into the back room to discover Daniel Rennes' fate. A strange symbol is scrawled in blood on the floor near his body. Pick up Rennes' wallet (1) and examine it (go to Inventory, then Items, select the wallet, and use it) to see a scrap of paper (2) with a code: 14529. Use this code to open the door with the keypad at the back of the room. Inside is load of stuff intended for Von Croy: a map of the archaeological dig, a map of the sewers around the Louvre, two guns—the DART SS and K2 IMPACTORtranq darts and a battery for those guns, plus some explosives (3-9). Whichever item you take last will trigger sensors that arm the bomb in the next room, so take care how you collect the items. (screenshots)

NOTE: The collectibles for the pawnshop are counted on a separate statistics screen. The scrap of paper doesn't appear to register, so you'll finish the level with 8/9 pickups, even if you get everything. (statistics)

I recommend picking up the explosives last. Before you take them, position Lara above them facing the button on the wall and save the game. Then if you flub the timed run, you can reload and try again. Pick up the explosives and immediately sidestep to the right twice before the cut scene starts. This shows the detonation countdown starting. When the cut scene finishes, you'll already be in position to press the button, which will save a second or two. (screenshots)

TIMED RUN: Press the button then pivot to the right as the door opens ever so slowly. Run out and swerve to the right toward the trapdoor. As soon as you see the hand icon, press Action to open the trapdoor. Then jump forward into the hole (or press Forward + Roll at the edge of the opening to somersault off the edge) to land facing forward. Take running jumps down the hall to cover the distance faster. Then fall or jump into the hole. Immediately turn left and run forward along the pipe to escape the billowing flames. (When Lara drops into the pipe and you lose control of the camera, try not to think about what you're seeing. Just press Forward and Left to start Lara running in the right direction.) (screenshots)

If you take too long, if the flames in the pipe overtake Lara, or if you try to exit through the front door (screenshots), rather than the trapdoor, the building explodes. If you make it to the end of the tunnel, all is well.

Cut scene: Kurtis enjoys a smoke as he watches Lara explode from the burning building.

Second Cut Scene: Eckhardt addresses the Cabal. He informs his fellow bad guys that they are now in possession of three of the Obscura paintings. According to Eckhardt, Von Croy located the fourth in Paris. Once they have it, they will gather in Prague, obtain the fifth painting, and awaken the Sleeper...whatever that means. He then calls in a hulking man named Gunderson and tells him to mobilize his team to get the fourth painting.

*NOTE ON LEVEL MAPS: VGCartography's Angel of Darkness maps follow a slightly different level-naming convention than I do. You'll notice most of the Parisian Ghetto-adjacent areas on the same large map. Later, the elemental levels off the Hall of Seasons are included on the same map as the hub level.
