KUWAQ YAKU – Howling Caves Challenge Tomb

Updated: 2/10/19()

SCORE & TIME ATTACK: If you're playing this tomb from the Challenge Tombs section of the main menu and need tips for the various Attack modes, check out these videos from Treeble: Score Attack or Time Attack.

TOMB ENTRANCE: The entrance to this tomb is through a cave at the northeast end of the HUNTING GROUNDS in the valley just north of the village. In the main walkthrough, we come to it on the way back from the TEMPLE OF LIFE, but you can also reach it by heading north, then northeast from the Kuwaq Yaku Ruins Base Camp or the Hunting Grounds Base Camp. Like the other tomb entrances, this one is marked with yellow-painted totems.

After making your way into the cave, step out onto the wooden walkway and dive into the cenote below. There's some salvage and a resource container on the bottom, and some gold ore embedded in the south wall below the surface. Take what you want and climb out on the ledge and continue through the cavern to the north. (screenshots)

DARK CAVERNS: Soon you'll come to a spike pit that Lara can't cross. Instead, climb up on the left and follow the path down and around to the far side of the pit. Head to the left, past the fire, and down into the tomb proper. When you step onto the slope leading down toward the doorway, Lara starts to slide. Try to steer toward the middle of the ledge and just before the end, jump forward and latch onto the climbable rock formation ahead. If you miss the jump or don't manage to hang on, Lara falls into the pit below, breaks her leg, and gets eaten by wolves. Yikes! Once you've managed to get a grip on the craggy wall, climb down as far as you can. Then rappel down as far as the cable will allow. Swing back and forth to build momentum, then jump forward onto the ledge below. Grab some supplies here, then jump to grab the handhold on the wall below the carved skulls. Climb to the right as far as you can. Then jump and latch onto the rough wall beyond. Axe climb downward. Then rappel the rest of the way down and drop to the floor. (screenshots)

Grab a few supplies here then crawl through the low, fume-filled tunnel into the next area. Halfway through the tunnel, a wolf lunges out from an opening on the right and tries to nip at Lara. It doesn't hurt, except for the minor heart attack from the jump scare. Beyond the tunnel is a cavern with a flat, open area down below. You can try and jump to grab the ledge on the other side of the gap, but even if you make the saving grab, the ledge breaks, and Lara falls to the ground. (screenshots)

WOLF DEN: Lara immediately goes into a defensive crouch as 4 wolves emerge from the edges of the cave. Try and take out one or two of them before they get close. Try to evade their attacks by pressing Drop/Roll (C/Circle/B), like you did with the jaguars earlier. As with the previous fights with the jaguars, keep moving, and don't forget to heal during combat if necessary. (Press F1 on the keyboard or hold L1/LB on the controller and press X/A.) (screenshots)

If you have unlocked the Puma's Feint skill, dodging will now bring up a QTE interface. When you see the Melee icon (which looks a little different depending on whether you're using a controller or keyboard), you'll have a brief window of opportunity to press the Melee button for a counterattack. You must do this as the white circle contracts inward toward the center ring. If you press too soon or too late, it won't work. But if you press Melee while the white ring is within the colored area of the disk, Lara will kill the wolf by stabbing it with an arrow, and you'll receive an XP bonus for a Dodge Kill. Don't worry if you haven't unlocked this skill yet. You can still evade by pressing C/Circle/B when a wolf lunges then turn and fire back. (screenshots)

If one of the wolves manages to pin Lara down, you will get a slightly different QTE. First you'll be prompted to wiggle the left stick back and forth or alternate pressing A and D on the keyboard. You'll need to do this fairly quickly, but not frantically. Then you'll see a Melee prompt. Press the button indicated before the white ring contracts all the way to the center of the colored circle, and Lara will stab the wolf with her knife. (screenshots)

When you've killed all 4 wolves, loot them for hides, and pick up some arrows and other resources scattered around the cavern. Also be sure to examine the mural (8/10), Howling Caves (Mam/Trials of the Gods) on the west ledge before moving on. (screenshots)

CLIMBING TO THE TOMB: Approach the ledge with the flames below. Stand under the rope-wrapped beam and shoot a rope arrow into the rope-wrapped beam on the other side of the gap. Climb along the rope and drop down on the opposite ledge. There's a resource container and a document (16/18), Secret Winds (Mam/Metamorphosis), lying on the ground to the left. Collect them. Then climb the craggy wall to the ledge above. At the top, head to the left to find a survival cache (12/14) and another document (17/18), Votan (Mam/Legends of the Maya). Then return to the right (north) to find the Petroleum Deposit Base Camp. (screenshots)

When you're ready to tackle the tomb puzzle, approach the well-lit area beyond the campsite. The strong wind prevents Lara from walking across the toppled column, but you can loot the resource container underneath it, then scramble up into the doorway. (screenshots)

HOWLING CAVES PUZZLE: As you enter the tomb, Lara notes the carving of the Xolotl on the far side of the room and says that's where she needs to go. The problem is there are fires blocking the walkway and a pit full of hungry wolves below. The puzzle involves a series of levers that open and close the shutters, allowing the wind to gust through the room. This can be useful for extinguishing fires and moving the huge, spiky pendulums dangling from the ceiling. However, the wind is also strong enough to knock Lara off the edge, so you'll need to work carefully. (screenshots)

Start by grabbing the first lever, just ahead on the right and pulling toward you. This opens the first set of shutters, just beyond the lever on the right wall. The wind blows through, gusting then dying down at intervals, causing the first spiky pendulum to swing back and forth. Move out onto the walkway, and when the pendulum approaches, jump up and grab onto it. As it swings to the left, climb in that direction, until Lara is hanging from the stone carving protruding from the left side of the pendulum. When the pendulum swings all the way to the left, jump to grab the ledge on the left. Lara will lose her grip, and you'll need to press Interact for a saving grab, otherwise she'll fall into the wolf pit below. Then pull up. (screenshots)

Loot the supply canister. Then use the second lever to open the second set of shutters, just ahead on the left wall. The wind blows through and starts moving the second spiky pendulum, but more importantly, it extinguishes the fire on the middle walkway that had been preventing you from moving forward. Jump across the gap to to the middle walkway and form there to the ledge on the far side of the room, to the right of the first set of shutters. Turn left and move to the end of this ledge. Then jump across to the next ledge on the same side of the room. (screenshots)

There's some gold ore sitting in a little pile near the wall. Grab it. Then turn around to face the second pendulum. Wait for the wind to blow it toward this side of the room. Then shoot a rope arrow into the coil at the top of the pendulum to pull it toward you. This should cause the pendulum to swing into the pile of debris on the middle walkway, knocking it off the edge. Jump back to the previous ledge along this same wall. Then jump from there to the middle walkway, then to the ledge with the second lever. (screenshots)

Use the second lever again to close the shutters. Jump back over to the center walkway. Turn left and walk across the narrow stone beam to the part of the center walkway where the pile of debris used to be. (If you try to do this without first closing the shutters, the wind will blow Lara off the edge.) Another fire prevents you from getting any closer to the altar. So turn left and jump over to the ledge with the third lever. (screenshots)

NOTE: If you're playing with keyboard and mouse and are having trouble operating any of the levers, try using a combination of controls (e.g. W+D, W+S, etc.) to pull or push the lever on a slight diagonal. That should help.

A third pendulum is embedded in the third set of shutters, preventing them from opening and closing. To solve that problem, move up the angled stones to the right of the lever, scramble up the square column, and grab the handhold above. Now climb to the right, jump and grab onto the third pendulum, climb around to the right, and drop onto the ledge below. Stand near the rope coil and shoot a rope arrow into the coil on the second pendulum. Grab the rope line and climb out until you can drop onto the ledge with the third lever. Jump back onto the center walkway, turn right, and walk back across the narrow stone beam. Turn right again and jump across to the ledge with the second lever. (screenshots)

Use the second lever to re-open the shutters. Now that the second and third pendulums are tethered together, when the wind blows through the hall, the second pendulum yanks the third one out of the wall, sending it crashing into the pit. Use the second lever one more time to close the shutters so you can return to the center walkway, across the beam, and over to the ledge with the third lever. (screenshots)

Now that the broken pendulum is out of the way, you can use the third lever to open the third set of shutters. The wind extinguishes the remaining fire on the center walkway. Yay! You can probably navigate the rest of the way with the third set of shutters open, but just to be safe, use the third lever once more to close the third set of shutters before jumping back to the center walkway and making your way toward the altar. (screenshots)

There's a pile of gold ore on the left side of the walkway and more gold to the right of the stele. Grab it and examine the stele to unlock Huracan's Mantle, a Scavenger Skill that reduces damage from fire and explosions. This is a passive skill, meaning it works without your having to do anything. (screenshots)

RETURNING TO THE BASE CAMP AND THE MAIN AREA: Return along the center walkway to the exit in the far left (southwest) corner of the room. This leads back to the windy cavern and the Petroleum Deposit Base Camp. If you like, you can follow the tunnel to the left of the campsite, which eventually leads back to the cave above and the HUNTING GROUNDS beyond. However, the last axe-climbing area, where you climb up out of the cenote pool, is frustratingly buggy, at least in my PC version. It may take several tries to make the jump from the left section of climbing wall to the right. So you could also Fast Travel from the Petroleum Deposit Base Camp to the Kuwak Yaku Ruins Base Camp instead. Then make your way on foot back to the northeast end of the valley. The only collectibles you'll miss are some mushrooms and a couple of small resource containers. (screenshots)
