Stella's Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness Walkthrough

NOTES ON THE REMASTER: At this point I can't guarantee 100% accuracy for this guide. Updates are in progress but will take time. Levels that have been worked on will say "Remaster," rather than "Classic," in the title. In the meantime, I have attempted to provide a running count of all kills and pickups, including totals for health packs, chocolates, sellable items, and cash, as well as notebook entries, which are needed for some achievements/trophies. If I've missed any, I do apologize. Please let me know if you discover anything not mentioned here. Also, in case it's not obvious, these guides are based on classic tank controls, and I have not yet included strats for all achievements/trophies.

LEVEL 23: THE SANITARIUM (Remaster)

Angel of Darkness Remastered Video Walkthrough by Eldincy

Items: 13, including 2 health items, 3 chocolate, Farsee Code, and Strahov Assistant's Pass
Kills: 13
Upgrades: none
Notebook Entries: none

Controls for Kurtis Trent: These are basically the same as controlling Lara. The only differences are he cannot swim or get strength upgrades, and his movement is a bit clunkier, if that's possible. In the classic game, his only weapon was the Boran X, but in the remaster, his Chirugai Blade actually works, so he essentially has unlimited ammo. Keyboard hotkeys for Boran and Chirugai are 1 and 2, respectively. To use the Chirugai, equip it from the Weapons section of your Inventory. Then press Action to throw it. It will fly toward the target you're aiming at then return to Kurtis's hand. Or, press Jump to slash out at nearby enemies with the blade. While the Chirugai is equipped, press Duck to activate Kurtis's Psychic Shield, which reduces incoming damage and prevents him from being knocked down or poisoned. You start the level with a few healing items and antidotes but do not have access to Lara's inventory.

ELEVATOR SHAFT: Kurtis remarks, "I have to get to sub level 6." So, down we go. Pick up the Boran clip (1) on the floor to the right and make your way down the shaft. You can either hang from the opening inside the shaft, tap Action to let go, and then quickly tap it again to re-grab on the level below, or make your way down the ledges where there are no railings. The first way is pretty straightforward. Just don't forget to pull up on the levels where there are pickups on the ledges. (screenshots)

Alternatively, to descend via the various ledges, first safety drop off the top ledge near where you found the first clip. Pick up another Boran clip (2) on this level. Jump to the yellow ledge along the outer wall and climb down the ladder. Go to the right, turn around, and jump to grab the end of the walkway surrounding the central shaft. Either drop and grab the ledge below and pull up. Or pull up, move around to the other end of the curved walkway, and safety drop to the level below, where you'll find some health pills (3). Move to the other end of the curved walkway, where there's no railing, and drop down again. (screenshots)

Enter the lift shaft, hang from the edge, and drop. Open the trapdoor and drop through. Exit the lift, turn left, climb down a short ladder then a long one. Kurtis will die if you drop to the floor, so don't bother trying. Instead walk to the edge where there's no railing, and jump to grab the next walkway where it meets the lift shaft. Pull up and exit through the door on the left. (screenshots)

SANITARIUM WARDS: Open the outer door of the barred sally port. Step forward and quickly kill the zombie-like inmate (1) waiting beyond the inner door. One hit with the Chirugai thrown at close range should do it. There's another inmate (2) pacing back and forth in the perpendicular hallway ahead. You can kill him with the Chirugai from a distance. Pick up the Boran clip (4) near the dead guard. Then continue forward. (screenshots)

Cutscene: Something drags a soldier's body into a duct. Kurtis muses, "And I thought this would be one of my easy days."

After the cinematic, Kurtis remarks, "It's a kill zone in here." Enter the open cell just ahead on the right and approach the man sitting on the cot. (screenshot)

Dialogue - Truck Driver: This poor guy has just about lost his mind. After transporting the Sleeper from Turkey, he and his comrades were locked up. He's been hiding out here, but his comrades were fed to Boaz's creation, the Proto-Nephilim.

Exit the cell, turn right, and approach the barred door with the keypad. Press Action and Kurtis will use his farsight ability to locate the door code. It is recorded in the Items section of your inventory as Farsee Code: 06289 (5). Use the code on the keypad to open the barred door. Grab the chocolate bar (6) (16/20 for "Chocollection") lying on the floor to the right of the glassed-in office. Use the Chirugai to kill the next inmate (3) through the bars before opening the door. Do the same thing at the next barred door: Wait for the inmate (4) in the hallway to approach, then throw the Chirugai through the bars. Open the door and follow the hallway to the left, past a side room with another dead guard. Go through the white double doors into the next area. (screenshots)

NOTE: The chocolate bars in this level count toward the "Chocollection" achievement/trophy. Lara's inventory doesn't carry over to Kurtis, so he'll only manage to collect three, but don't eat them if you want that award. Using the Chirugai from a distance and the psychic shield up close should help conserve health.

DINING HALL: Proceed down the ramp. Now you're in a curved hallway that passes by an open dining area. You'll meet several enemies here. The first inmate (5) approaches as you enter. Another inmate (6) is lurking in the first cell on the right. You can probably kill him from the doorway. Then enter the cell to find another chocolate bar (7) (17/20 for "Chocollection"). (screenshots)

Continue along the curved hallway to the open dining area. The inmate in the orange PJ's (7, optional) is damaged but docile. Kurtis will aim at him, though, making it more difficult to fight the dangerous inmate (8) who approaches along the curved hallway. Your active target glows, so press Roll to switch targets, then back away as you throw the Chirugai at the hostile inmate. Or, just kill them both if you're feeling ornery. (WWLCD?) You'll find more chocolate (8) (18/20 for "Chocollection") and a Boran clip (8) on the floor of the dining room. (screenshots)

There's a locked door to the right of the KITCHEN, but you don't yet have the card that opens it. Also notice the door with the number plate opposite the dining hall. Make a note of the code (38471) for later. Leave the dining hall and continue to the left along the curved hallway, killing another zombie inmate (9) as you go. (Again, if Kurtis targets the tame inmate and the camera bugs out, press Roll to change targets. Or put away the Chirugai, advance a little further along the hallway, and try again.) There's another open cell and a "treatment room" off the main hallway with some sinister equipment but no pickups. Proceed up the ramp at the end of the hall and through the double doors. (screenshots)

LABORATORY: Go past the dismembered soldier into the lab at the end of the hall. Get the Boran ammo (9) on the floor and the scientist's STRAHOV ASSISTANT'S PASS (10). Return to the dining room the way you came. (screenshots)

DINING HALL (again): Swipe the assistant's pass in the card reader next to the door in the far right corner of the room. Enter, turn left, move past the metal stairs into the KITCHEN, and kill the inmate (10) that emerges from the back room. Then climb the metal stairs just outside the kitchen door. At the top, go right and pick up a large health pack (11). Now continue along the catwalk in the other direction. Take a running jump across the gap. Use the security station ahead to enter the code you saw on the wall below: 38471. This opens the door near the sign containing the code. Return to the gap in the walkway, drop down, and go through the KITCHEN to the DINING HALL, then out into the curved hallway. Proceed straight ahead through the door with the numbered sign. Continue upstairs and through the next set of doors. (screenshots)

Cutscene: A scientist is slumped over his desk, wondering why he didn't take that sweet government research job, when he hears strange noises coming from a ventilation duct. The Proto-Nephilim springs out and attacks him.

SECOND LAB & VENTILATION DUCTS: When the cutscene ends, Kurtis is standing in the hallway outside the lab. Another inmate (11) approaches from the right. Kill him and continue to the end of the hallway. Pry open the vent, duck, and scooch through. (Kurtis doesn't exactly crawl.) Climb up into the higher duct, follow it to the end, and somersault into the lab shown in the cutscene. (screenshots)

At this point, you may notice 2 more inmates (12-13) in the hallway outside the window. They can't get in, so you can ignore them. (Skim these tactics, though, since they may come in handy later.) If you want all kills, take a standing jump onto the table below the duct, pull up into the opening, and return through the ducts to the hallway. Kurtis can't throw the Chirugai while crouching, but he can aim the Boran X while kneeling. So if the nearest enemy is too close to the duct opening and won't move away, press Duck again to go on one knee, equip the gun, and draw. Or, move out and quickly equip the Chirugai. Then press Duck to activate the psychic shield. This will reduce incoming damage so you can fight more effectively in close quarters. The other enemy takes a little longer to approach. So run around the corner to meet (and kill) him. Then return through the ducts to the SECOND LAB. (screenshots)

Cross the LABORATORY, pry open another vent at floor level, and go through. Again, climb into a higher duct and follow it to the next room. (screenshots)

Cutscene: From hiding, Kurtis sees the Proto-Nephilim feasting on another soldier. Perhaps sensing Kurtis's presence, the beast flees through an opening in the ceiling.

Drop down and pick up the Boran ammo (12). You can't get past the moving fan and you can't climb the broken ladder. So stand back and shoot one of the yellow tanks to cause an explosion that destroys the ladder. Now you can pull up onto the ledge. Throw the switch to turn off the fan then duck under it. Go through the duct at floor level on the left. Follow the hall to the right to finish the level. (screenshots)

NOTE: The game is fairly generous with ammo, but if you do run out, the clip near the fan will respawn, so you can't get stuck here.

*NOTE ON LEVEL MAPS: VGCartography's Angel of Darkness maps follow a slightly different level-numbering convention than I do. You'll notice most of the Parisian Ghetto-adjacent areas on the same large map. Later, the elemental levels off the Hall of Seasons are included on the same map as the hub level. Visit VGCartography on DeviantArt and follow on Twitter/X and YouTube for more fantastic game maps.
