IMPORTANT: Levels 13 through 20, set in Alexandria, are interconnected. Some backtracking among them is needed to find all the necessary items. This walkthrough covers what I hope is the most direct route including all kills, pick-ups, and secrets. I have also included an ALEXANDRIA CHART outlining the basic path through the levels. This chart contains minor spoilers, such as keys and puzzle items, so you may want to avoid it unless you get lost/confused. The walkthrough also contains notes on what to do if you missed any crucial items.
LEVEL 13: ALEXANDRIA
Kills: 9 (13) Items: 9 plus Laser Sight Secrets: 1*
NOTE: There are 9 enemies present during your first visit to Alexandria. You'll only encounter the other 4 if you return to this level later from the COASTAL RUINS. Details are below.
Cutscene: Lara standing in an alley after leaving the train.
TRAIN YARD: From the low steps near the fence, head to the right along an alleyway with movie posters on the walls. (screenshot) As you approach the dark corner at the foot of the staircase, 2 black scorpions emerge. Shoot them, pick up the small medipack in the corner, and continue up the stairs to the street. (screenshot)
COURTYARD WITH FOUNTAIN: As you emerge into the open, a blue-robed mercenary appears on the far left side of the courtyard. Follow him as he runs into an alley on the right, then enters the first building on the left, a WAREHOUSE containing many wooden crates. Kill him and 2 of his buddies lurking among the crates. (screenshot)
NOTE: These three don't drop any items, so if you don't care about killing every enemy, you can just shoot the first guy as he runs across the courtyard and avoid entering the warehouse. If you let the first guy go, he will emerge later and attack Lara, so it's best to deal with him now.
Return outside and cross the COURTYARD to the far right (northeast) corner. (screenshot) At the end of this short alley is a locked cage with a MOTORCYCLE inside. You can't open the cage yet, but you'll return later. For now, pick up some shotgun ammo lying on the ground here. (screenshot)
Return to the COURTYARD again. Most of the doors here are just painted on, but the building with the stone arches to the left (east) of the fountain has a working door. (screenshot) Press Action to open it. Enter and climb the stairs to JEAN-YVES'S STUDY.
FMV Sequence: Lara finds her friend working at his desk. He tells her that he may have a lead that could help Lara find the Armor of Horus before Von Croy and advises her to search the catacombs beneath Alexandria for clues to the location of Cleopatra's Palaces. (A transcript of this exchange appears in the separate Cinematics section.)
After Jean resumes his work, pick up a few items lying around the study: shotgun shells between the bookshelves in the northeast corner, as well as the LASER SIGHT, arrows, and more shotgun shells (3 separate pick-ups) on the small chest of drawers near the entrance. (screenshots)
NOTE: You don't yet have a weapon you can combine with the LASER SIGHT, but it will come in handy later.
Go out onto the ledge overlooking the COURTYARD and head to the left. Two blue-robed gunmen start taking potshots at Lara from the next building. One is just ahead on the right. The other is off to the left. If you'd rather not jump over and confront them, you can run almost to the end of the ledge and target the first gunman without taking fire from the second. Then step out a little farther so Lara can aim at the enemy on the left. (screenshots)
Now take a running jump over to where they were standing. Pick up the Uzi ammo dropped by the enemy on the left. Backtrack to the corner overlooking the courtyard. Notice the switch on the front of the building across the way. To reach it, first take a running jump and grab the tiled roof of that building. Traverse to the right, around the corner, then release and re-press Action to let go and grab the switch on the way down. (screenshots)
Open the door just to the right (on the front of the same building with the switch) and enter with weapons ready. Another bad guy waits just inside on the left. Two shotgun blasts at close range will take him out, but you can also use pistols, etc. The door at the back of this little reading room will be open if you pulled the switch on the outside of the building. This is the level's only SECRET (44/70), a large medipack and 2 quivers of arrows (3 separate pick-ups). (screenshots)
JEAN-YVES' STUDY (again): If you like, before leaving ALEXANDRIA you can drop in on Jean-Yves once more. He's upstairs in the building on the east side of the courtyard. (screenshot) This is a good opportunity to get the LASER SIGHT if you missed before. It's sitting on the small, ornate chest just to the left of the entrance. (screenshot)
Approaching him now triggers another cutscene, in which Jean tells Lara about a collector who may have a lead on the Armor of Horus. (The transcript is here.) If the cutscene does not start automatically, try dropping down from the ledge overlooking the courtyard and re-entering the study. That should do it.
When you're ready to move on, follow the alley to the southeast, past the entrance to the WAREHOUSE where you killed the first 3 mercenaries. If you're coming from Jean-Yves' study, it's off to the left. If you're coming directly from the secret, make a U-turn around to the right. (screenshot) At the end of the alley, turn left into the narrow passageway. Draw weapons and turn right, then left again. Kill another blue-robed mercenary lurking in the next room. He drops a small medipack. (screenshot) Continue to the end of the passageway to enter the the COASTAL RUINS level.
REVISITNG ALEXANDRIA LATER IN THE GAME: You can revisit Jean-Yves several times. This is optional, but if you choose to do it, the first time you return through the passageway from the COASTAL RUINS to ALEXANDRIA, you'll meet 2 black scorpions in the COURTYARD WITH THE FOUNTAIN. (screenshot) In case it's been a while, Jean's building is on the right (east) side of the courtyard. (screenshot)
Jean-Yves will have new advice for Lara depending on how far you've progressed in the other levels. Each of these short cutscenes is covered in the Cinematics section and mentioned in the relevant sections of the walkthrough. They are also noted on the ALEXANDRIA CHART.
When you exit Jean-Yves' building the after speaking with him, you'll encounter 2 more black scorpions in the COURTYARD. Deal with them. Then return through the alley in the southeast corner to get back to the COASTAL RUINS.
*NOTE ON SECRETS: There are 70 secrets in the entire game. These are marked "(x/70)" in this walkthrough. To check your progress in-game, press Pause (P on keyboard, Start on PlayStation or Dreamcast controller) then choose Statistics. At the end of this level, you should have 44/70.
