PERUVIAN JUNGLE – Judge's Gaze Challenge Tomb

Updated: 12/23/18()

SCORE & TIME ATTACK: If you're playing this tomb from the Challenge Tombs section of the main menu and need tips for the various Attack modes, check out these videos from Treeble: Score Attack or Time Attack.

TOMB ENTRANCE: You can't access this tomb the first time you pass it, since you won't have the CLIMBING AXES. Later, after Lara reunites with Jonah and heads for Kuwak Yaku, you will pass a side path that leads back to the starting area. This is described in the main walkthrough. You can also return later in the game by using any base camp to Fast Travel back to the Plane Wreckage Base Camp. From the campsite, follow the path around to the northwest. Climb onto the ledge with the yellow painted decorations. Wade through a small pool. Then use your climbing axe to break down the crumbling wall and squeeze through the opening. (screenshots)

BUG NOTE: Once you break down the crumbling wall and enter the side area, I recommend completing the challenge tomb before moving on. If you leave and return later, a bug may prevent you from unlocking the Caiman's Heart skill when examining the stele. As far as I know, this only happens in the PC version, but better safe than sorry. For details see the footnote in the main walkthrough.

CAVERN WITH POOL: Either dive into the pool below or attempt to grapple-swing across the gap, grab a handhold on the other side, which then collapses, dropping Lara into the pool. Gather a few plants on the bottom of the pool then swim/wade through the opening to the east. (screenshots)

On the far side of the pool, just to the right of the steps, is a mural (6/7), God of Death (Mam Dialect/Pantheon of Gods 3 Story). In order to raise the statue in the doorway so Lara can get through, you'll need to lower the counterweight to the right of it. Climb onto the ledge in the far right (southeast) corner, climb onto the ledge above, and jump from there to grab the horizontal bar above the counterweight. Lara's added weight pulls the counterweight down, raising the statue. As long as you hang on, the weight will sink all the way down and snap into the clamp below. You can then let go and the statue will remain raised. Go through to find the Jungle Cavern Base Camp. You probably won't need a rest so soon, but make sure you pass near enough to activate it so you can use it later for Fast Travel. (screenshots)

CHASM WITH ROPE BRIDGE: Continue across the rope bridge to the far side of the chasm. Enter the ruined building ahead and swim through a short, flooded passageway into the room beyond. Head up the slope to the left to find a container of random supplies. Then climb the wall to the left of it. At the top is another mural (7/7), Judges' Gaze (Mam Dialect/Trials of the Gods Story). Continue to the main area, which Lara surmises was a court used for playing the ancient Mesoamerican ball game Pok A Tok. (screenshots)

NOTE: If you've been following this walkthrough, when Lara reads this mural, her understanding of the Mam dialect will increase, enabling you to read Proficient Mam Monoliths, should you happen to come across any.

LADDER PUZZLE: Examine the various moving parts: A wooden ladder with 2 rope-wrapped sections, 2 dangling statues connected to 2 counterweights, and 2 carts on tracks, one of which is currently attached to the left counterweight, holding it down. (If you're playing on one of the easier settings, Survival Instinct will illuminate everything you can interact with.) Hop down and go behind the first cart (i.e., the one attached to the left counterweight). Grab the handle of the cart and pull it back, releasing the counterweight. As soon as the left counterweight is no longer held in place by the cart, it rises up, allowing the left statue to fall. (screenshots)

Push the first cart forward along the track until it runs into the ladder and won't go any farther. You'll need it again in a little while. Now go to the second cart, near the left statue, and drag it back along the track to the intersection where the first cart started. The clamps on the cart will fall open when you've positioned it correctly. Stand near the rope coil on the left side of the ladder and shoot a rope arrow into the coil on the left statue, tethering statue to ladder. (screenshots)

Turn around and head for the northwest corner, beyond the carts. Climb the right wall to reach the upper floor of the building. Go forward, then right, taking care not to trigger the spear trap by accident. As usual, cut the tripwire or just scramble carefully under the spears. Just around the next corner, lying on the floor on the right, is a document (10/13), Jack's Journal, from the Expedition Unknown 2 Story. Move to the opening overlooking the ladder and jump onto the left counterweight. Lara's weight pulls it down, raising the left statue. If you positioned the second cart directly below, it will clamp onto the weight and hold it in place. Let go and drop to the ground. Now the puzzle is half done. (screenshots)

With the ladder slightly raised, you can now push the first cart underneath it to the right side of the court. Position the cart at the intersection so the clamps open up. Stand under the rope coil on the right side of the ladder and shoot a rope arrow into the right statue. tethering the statue to the ladder. (screenshots)

Climb back up to the ledge near the entrance and from there to the upper level on the left side (i.e., right side if you were facing the ladder). Ignore the pry barrier for now and follow the passageway to the left. Just before the end, lying on the floor to the right, you'll find another document (11/13) called Surprise Witness (Mam Dialect/Metamorphosis Story). Move to the opening overlooking the ladder and jump onto the right counterweight. Lara's weight pulls it down, raising the right statue. As long as you tied the statue to the ladder with a rope arrow, this should raise the ladder completely. (screenshots)

Climb the ladder to the top. Jump across the gap to the tomb stele and examine it to unlock Caiman's Heart, a Scavenger Skill that makes Lara's health regenerate more quickly. There are also offering bowls on either side of the stele containing bits of gold ore. (screenshots)

RETURNING TO THE MAIN AREA: Stand under the rope-wrapped beam near the stele and shoot a rope arrow into the beam below. Slide down. Move through the passageway and break down the pry barrier you passed earlier. Go through the opening and scramble up onto the wall ahead. Gather a few supplies in this area then scramble up another wall to reach another rope line. (screenshots)

Slide across the chasm with the rope bridge into a dark tunnel. Lara lets go automatically at the end and tumbles down a muddy slope into a cave. Scramble up the wall ahead on the left. After Lara grabs the narrow ledge, jump up again and latch onto the climbing wall. Climb upward and as far to the right as you can. Lean out to the right, then jump, holding the button while Lara is in the air to get the longest possible air time. She should then grab the handhold on the other wall. Climb to the left, then jump up and latch onto the next craggy wall. Continue climbing up and left. When you run out of climbing wall, lean then jump to the left to grab the ledge ahead, and pull up. Walk out to the end of the jutting tree trunk and jump to the nearest branch. From there, jump forward to swing around the next one, and grab the flowery vine on the tree beyond. Scramble up to the branch above, then jump down onto the ledge. (screenshots)

You'll need to grapple-swing across the next wide gap. Jump out toward the hanging vine and press Interact/Grapple to grapple it. Swing forward, and press Interact again to latch onto the climbable wall with your axes. Climb onto the ledge above. Jump across the next gap and latch onto the climbing wall. Climb down a bit. Then rappel down to the ground. Squeeze through the narrow opening to get back to the main area. (screenshots)

If this is your first time through the PERUVIAN JUNGLE level, you'll need to RETURN TO JONAH and continue the story. Pick up the main walkthrough near the end.

If you returned to this area later in the game, just head for the Plane Wreckage Base Camp and fast travel out to wherever you left off.
