Stella's Walkthroughs - Tomb Raider: Legend for Nintendo DS

WARNING: The save system in this game is broken. Autosave checkpoints appear to register, and if Lara dies the game usually resumes at the last checkpoint. However, at least for some of the checkpoints, if you quit the game and/or turn off the DS, the game will resume at the beginning of the level, rather than at the most recent checkpoint. If you can't make it all the way through a level in one sitting, pause the game and close the DS so it goes into hibernation. Plug in the DS charger so it doesn't lose power while you're away. Then, when when you return and open the DS, it should start up where you left off, with the game paused.

LEVEL 2: PERU

Updated: 1/13/07()

STREETS OF PARAÍSO: Run to the fourth side alley, climb up the three horizontal bars at the back of the alley, and jump to the roof on the right to get a bronze reward. Drop down on the right near the sparring dummy, which serves no real purpose except to practice shooting. Continue toward the Jeep.

After the movie in which Lara meets Anaya, a CHECKPOINT registers. Run around the town square, killing 4 mercenaries and picking up any items they drop. Go to the right and climb onto the small vendor's stall and from there to the roof. Swing across the horizontal flagpoles to the next rooftop, where you'll find another bronze reward. Stand beneath the angled cable and jump straight up. Lara grabs it and slides down automatically.

Go to the right to the alley between the two buildings with the rounded archways. There's a silver reward behind one of the columns.

Return to the left to the alley behind the base of the angled cable. Climb the flagpole and jump off on the right. Grapple-swing to the next roof. Kill the soldier there and take his SMG. Go through the room on the right, get a bronze reward and exit to the right. Hop over the railing and climb down to the ground.

Go to the left for another bronze reward. You must excavate it by blowing into the mic or tapping the touch screen repeatedly with the stylus. Continue right to the next CHECKPOINT.

OPEN STREET WITH TRUCK & TELEPHONE POLE: You'll meet several more soldiers here. The first 2 mercenaries drop shotgun shells, SMG or health.

Climb the ladder to get a bronze reward. Go through the door nearby, shoot another mercenary. Exit through the opposite door, drop down onto the stall then to the ground.

There are 5 more soldiers to the right. You can kill the first by toppling the telephone pole on top of him (press A when you see the icon on screen). The remaining men can be killed in the usual way or by climbing onto the flatbed truck and using the machinegun. (Press Y to activate, A to shoot and X to let go.) Before going on, get the silver reward in the bushes near the back wall. Continue right toward the motorcycle.

MOTORCYCLE CHASE: A CHECKPOINT registers as this section starts. Motorcycle controls are: R to accelerate, B to brake/reverse, Pad Left/Right to steer and A to shoot at enemies. To pick up the red health packs, just drive over them.

This section is pretty straightforward but requires a bit of coordination. Keep moving forward as much as possible, while steering to avoid obstacles and shooting enemies when they approach.

When you come to the burning bridge, it's not necessary to avoid the flames unless Lara's health is very low. Drive straight through them, keeping to the right side of the bridge. Accelerate as you reach the end of the bridge to jump the gap.

Beyond the bridge, continue as before. When you come to the trucks driving along in front of Lara, stay to the right at first and shoot the 2 men in the first truck. Then move to the left and shoot the other 2 soldiers. An action-packed cinematic ensues, followed by another CHECKPOINT.

EXCAVATION: Hold R and press B to roll through the low opening to the right. Slide down the slope and traverse across the pit. A rockslide prevents you from going straight along the tunnel, so backtrack to the T in the passage with the stacked crates. Pick up a silver reward behind those boxes and continue on.

In the next room, push the crate onto the pressure pad to extend a horizontal spear above. Stand on the crate and jump straight up to grab the spear. Swing around it and jump to the ledge on the right. Move toward the back wall and then jump to grab the statue on the back wall, climb to the right, then jump to the top of the slope.

Continue to the right to a room with a dangling rope. Go to the right and pull the stone sphere off the pressure pad to retract the spears. Return to the left, staying toward the outside of the pressure pad so Lara doesn't get hurt when the spears pop out. Climb up on the ledge to the left and take a running jump to grab the rope. Swing and jump past the retracted spears to the next ledge. Drop down on the other side to find a bronze reward.

Follow the tunnel to the next room. Push the boulder off the ledge. It rolls down onto the pressure pad below, extending another spear. Take a running jump to the next ledge, then a running jump to grab the spear. Swing around and jump to grab the dangling rope, then swing to the next ledge.

Continue to the right and traverse along the bar above the spike pit to reach the next CHECKPOINT.

FLOODED TUNNELS: Climb onto the wooden platform and get the silver reward behind the crates. Continue to a series of flooded tunnels. (It looks like you might be able to climb the ledges above the pool, but I couldn't figure out how.) Swim down, then right, then up to the surface for air. When Lara's air bar is full again, swim down, then right, then up again. Get air once more, then swim down then into a tunnel about halfway down the shaft on the right. Swim on to the right and then up toward the ceiling. Be sure to swim far enough out to the right to clear the overhanging rocks, otherwise Lara won't be able to surface.

UNDERWATER LIGHTS: There are 4 blue lights below the surface of the water. Each of these must be activated in order to drain the water from the room and move on. The order in which you use them doesn't seem to matter, as long as you activate them all within the allowed time. If you take too long, they reset and you must try again. I found it easiest to work left to right. Swim down to the leftmost light, position Lara in front of it and press Y to activate it. Swim to the right and do the same to activate the next light. Then swim to the surface for air. When Lara's air meter is full again, swim down and activate the third and fourth lights.

After the water recedes, pick up the bronze reward in the alcove between the first two lights. Jump through the hole in the wall on the right. After the cinematic comes another CHECKPOINT.

DEEPER INTO THE RUINS: To get up the steep slopes, climb the ledges and jump to the ledge on the right. Then take a running jump off the edge and press X to grapple-swing to the next ledge. Climb straight up to get another bronze reward. Then take a running jump off the right edge of this ledge and grapple-swing to the top of the next slope. Continue right to the next CHECKPOINT.

When you reach the collapsing floor above a deep pit, run across the crumbling floor until you the blocks start to collapse beneath Lara's feet. You'll make it about halfway across. Keep running and jump to grab the far edge. If you jump too soon, you probably won't reach the opposite side.

STONE SPHERE PUZZLE: Go to the right and use the grapple to pull a stone sphere from its pedestal. Roll the stone onto the nearby pressure pad. This opens the huge statue on the left side of the room, revealing a set of ladders.

Climb either ladder until Lara can't go any farther. Jump toward the center of the statue to grab a small ledge. Jump straight up twice then jump to either side to grab the top part of the ladder. Continue climbing all the way to the top. Push the second stone sphere off the top of the statue. It rolls onto the other pressure pad, opening the other giant statue.

Ignore the reward off to the right for now. Carefully climb down to the floor. Then climb up the statue on the right. After the movie, a CHECKPOINT registers.

LEAVING THE RUINS: Approach the opening and a brief cut scene shows the way to the exit. Move to the left side of the opening and climb to the ledge above. Move to the back of the ledge, and take a running jump to the left to grab the ledge below the gold reward. Pull up and get it. Slide down the sloping ledge to the right and drop down to the spot with the previous checkpoint. Climb down to the floor, then go to the left.

Climb to the top of the other big statue just as you did before. Stand near the back wall and then run off the left edge to land on the small ledge below. Hop over to the next ledge. Then traverse to the left along the carved molding on the back wall, jumping past the gaps as you go along. Jump to grab the dangling rope. You can't jump into the big hole in the wall, so climb down the rope a bit, swing to the next ledge on the left.

Make your way back to the left, sliding down the slopes and shoot the mercenary waiting below. Slide down the next two slopes, killing first 3 more soldiers. They drop assorted goodies, possibly grenades, health packs, etc.

Jump through the hole into the room with the blue lights, where you'll meet 2 mercenaries. They also drop items like shotgun shells or grenades.

Climb the rope at the left side of this room and jump into the opening on the left. Continue left to a vertical shaft, which is no longer flooded. Hang from the edge and drop down ledge by ledge to the floor. Kill another mercenary and climb the ladder on the left side of the shaft. Keep going, climb the rope all the way to the top and jump onto the wooden platform on the left. Kill one more soldier to finish the level.

CROFT MANOR: Completing Peru opens another of the doors leading out of the main hall in Lara's home. If you like, you can explore there and pick up a few more rewards.
