STELLA'S TOMB RAIDER UNDERWORLD WALKTHROUGH - For Nintendo Wii Only
(Windows PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 version - click here)

INTRODUCTORY NOTES

STORYLINE: Tomb Raider: Underworld is the sequel to Tomb Raider: Legend and includes references to the original Tomb Raider and its more recent remake, Tomb Raider: Anniversary. If you haven't played those games, you may have some difficulty following the plot of Underworld. A brief refresher is included in an introductory cinematic.

CONTROLS: These are explained in detail on my Underworld Controls page. If you haven't played Anniversary for the Wii, I recommend leaving Helper Buttons and Training Text enabled in the Game Options menu. These provide on-screen hints to help you learn the controls. My controls page also includes information on inventory, weapons, health items, treasures and relics, unlockable content, including Xbox 360 Achievements, and much more. I encourage you to check it out.

SAVING AND CHECKPOINTS: Like the last two games, Underworld has autosave checkpoints. Whenever you pass a checkpoint, the game is saved automatically. Then, if Lara dies or you quit the game and restart, the game reloads at the last checkpoint. In the Wii game, each time you reach a new checkpoint the word "checkpoint" appears on-screen and there is an audible chime. If you pass over a checkpoint you've crossed previously, there is no indication, but the game usually autosaves again. I haven't noted the locations of each checkpoint as I did in the Anniversary walkthrough, though I may go back and add this later.

I highly recommend that you do not rely exclusively on the autosave. Instead be sure also to save manually at least a few times in each level. Then, if you miss something or run into a bug, you can reload rather than having to replay the entire level.

PROLOGUE: CROFT MANOR

Updated: 1/2/09()

The game begins with a cinematic sequence recapping past events in Tomb Raider: Legend and Anniversary. We then witness a huge explosion that leaves Croft Manor in flames. (Press B to skip the cut scene if you want to. If you need help understanding what the characters are saying, enable Subtitles in the Audio/Visual menu.)

From the starting point, move forward along the hall and around the next two corners, avoiding the open flames. Jump up to grab the low wall (press A); jump again to pull up to the level above. Continue up the stairs. Stand near the switch on the left and press Interact (-) then raise the Wii Remote and Nunchuk with your thumbs pointing toward each other and pull down, mimicking the motion of pulling a switch. This opens the door ahead.

NOTE: You should see on-screen hints explaining how to use the various controls. Once you become familiar with the controls, you can turn these off by disabling Training Text and Helper Buttons in the Game Options menu.

Go through the door into Lara's bedroom. Duck or roll under the pile of debris by pressing Forward and (-). Go around to the left, climb onto the flat-topped pile of stones and hop down on the other side. Face the wooden door and press (Z) to target the door. Move the Wii Remote to aim the white reticle inside the red target. Then fire (B) several times to shoot the door to bits. Go through into the hallway.

Stand at the edge of the flaming hole in the floor facing the narrow light-colored band of molding on the wall ahead. Jump across the hole to grab onto the molding. Climb to the left and then jump up to grab the strip of molding above. Climb to the left some more until Lara is hanging above another strip of solid molding. Press Crouch (-) to drop and grab it. Continue climbing to the left. When you can't go any farther, press Back on the control stick to lean away from the wall, and then press Jump to leap off and land on the solid floor behind.

Stand next to the ornate lacquered chest and press Interact (-) to grab onto it. Use the control stick to push it forward toward the wall. Let go (Interact again). Then climb on top of it and jump to grab the horizontal molding on the wall. Climb to the right as far as Lara will go. Then jump to the right to land on the safe floor ahead.

Watch out for the gap in the floor ahead. Press (B) to grapple the door and (Z) to pull on the cable to yank the door from its frame. Press Interact (-) to detach the cable. Then walk over the fallen door into the main hall of the manor.

Go left to the end of the balcony and turn right to face out over the flaming staircase. Position the camera behind Lara (C) so you can see the metal ring on the ceiling above. Jump forward and press the Grapple key (B) to fire the grapple, anchoring it to the ring. While hanging from the cable, Lara will brace her feet against the wall. Again, move the camera behind her (C) and then begin running back and forth along the wall to build momentum. When Lara swings to the right, jump in that direction to land on the balcony on the other side of the burning stairs.

Turn right and move along the balcony to the gap in the railing. Step off to grab the edge and then drop to the floor.

In the ensuing cinematic sequence, Lara spots Zip and Winston near the main entrance. Zip aims a gun at Lara and fires. Winston tries to intervene, but Zip seems determined to stop Lara from following them. Apparently he knows or suspects something that neither Winston, Lara or we, the players, do.
