Stella's Tomb Raider 2013 Walkthrough - For Windows, Macintosh, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One

NOTE: Combat strategy is based on the Medium difficulty setting, so your experience may vary slightly. In addition to the walkthroughs for each level, there are separate pages for Controls & Gameplay Tips, Skill & Weapon Upgrades, and Collectible Items.

SAVING AND CHECKPOINTS: Like the last several games, TOMB RAIDER uses autosave checkpoints. Whenever you pass a checkpoint, the game is saved automatically. Then, if Lara dies or you quit the game and restart, the game reloads at the last checkpoint. If you only rely on one autosave, you may run into trouble if you get stuck in the game, encounter a bug, or if your autosave file becomes corrupted. To avoid problems, I highly recommend changing your save slot at least once each level. You may also want to periodically back up your autosaves on a memory card (consoles) or into a separate folder (PC). See the controls page for details.

AREA 10: MOUNTAIN VILLAGE (second visit)

Updated: 10/4/15()

This can be a confusing level, since it is large, has many isolated sections, and changes during the course of the game. I've attempted to describe an optimum path to all collectibles, but if you miss anything during the three visits that occur as part of the storyline, you can always return later via the Fast Travel network. All of the major items will still be accessible.

Camps: Village Overlook (Fast Travel), Hall of Ascension (Day Camp)*
Gear: none  Weapons/Weapon Parts: Bow Part (2/2), Handgun Part (1/3), Rifle Parts (1/3 and 2/3)**
Documents: 2/7 Relics: 2/6  GPS caches: 2/15  Treasure Maps: GPS Cache Map***
Challenge Tombs: 1/2  Challenges: Illumination - 5/10 items; Egg Poacher - 2/5 items ***
Area Maps: Mountain Village - Part 2****

*The Village Plateau Fast Travel camp (where you first met up with Roth) and the Tomb of the Unworthy day camp (in the first challenge tomb) are still accessible, but the path described in this walkthrough does not happen to take you there. For details about the different types of camps, see the Controls page.

**Except for the Handgun Part, which is in a fixed location, the other weapon parts in this area are found in random salvage crates. I have noted their approximate locations, but don't be surprised if you find them a little sooner or later than I did.

***According to your level map, there are a total of 7 documents, 6 relics, and 15 GPS caches in the Mountain Village; however, this section of the walkthrough only covers some of them. Similarly, there are two challenges, one with 10 items and one with 5. This walkthrough describes the locations of 7 of these challenge items. The rest of these collectibles and challenges are detailed in the Mountain Village Part 1 and Mountain Village Part 3 sections.

****Some parts of this area are still not accessible the second time you visit. You will re-enter the Mountain Village a third time, from a different angle with a new weapon, later in the game. Then you will be able to pick up any collectibles you missed. Or, you can return later using the Fast Travel network. The items numbered on my map are covered in this walkthrough. For the others, you'll need to look at the Mountain Village Part 1 and Part 3 walkthroughs. Also note that the in-game map does not include a compass rose showing which way is north. So when I refer to map directions in my walkthrough, assume North is up, east right, south down, and west left.

A ROAD LESS TRAVELLED (continued)

When Lara emerges from the tunnel, she finds Roth standing near a new Base Camp: Village Overlook. His instincts apparently told him to clear out shortly before the plane crashed. As they survey the wreckage scattered around the village below, mere feet from Roth's old campsite, Lara hears a distress call from the plane's co-pilot over her walkie talkie. She tries to respond but he can't hear her. Against Roth's advice, she decides to go after the co-pilot and try to help.

You receive 500 XP at this point, probably enough to unlock another Skill Point.

GUILTY CONSCIENCE

OBJECTIVE: Reach the Smoke Beacon

Either before or after using the camp, be sure to talk to Roth as part of the Chatterbox Achievement/Trophy. Move close to him until you see the Interact icon and press that button to converse. Repeat this until he will no longer talk to you and you see the 'TR' icon at the bottom right corner of the screen, indicating an autosave.

MOUNTAIN VILLAGE NORTHWEST LEDGES: When you're done talking with Roth and upgrading Lara's skills and gear, head down the rocky path to the end, where you'll find a post for anchoring a rope arrow. Shoot one into the archway below and slide down to the upper level of the village—an area that you weren't able to explore last time you were here. (screenshots)

Stay hidden behind the low plank wall next to the house for now, though, since there are 3 enemies with rifles milling around in front. After a little conversation, one walks away up the steps ahead. You can shoot him if you like, but this will probably attract the attention of the others. You can also just let him go. Then it's not too hard to take the others out with headshots once they separate and face in different directions. (screenshots)

NOTE: If you kill two of the men but let that first one get away, sometimes Lara will remain crouched in ready position as though there are still enemies about. Don't worry about it. She should act normally once you move out of this area.

Loot the bodies and smash the salvage crate near the low wooden wall where you hid. This crate contains a BOW PART (2/2) which, along with the other part, will enable you to upgrade your bow next time you reach a base camp. (screenshots)

NOTE: Some of the weapon part locations are random. So if you don't get the BOW PART here, you should find it soon. Just keep opening those salvage crates. If you missed the first bow part in the Base Exterior area, you can still go back for it. Next time you get to a Fast Travel camp, use it to return to that level. Check the walkthrough if you need help finding the bow part. Then Fast Travel back to the camp where you left off.

When you move around in front of the house, Lara hears Reyes and Roth over the walkie talkie. Roth says he's with Lara and they'll be coming down the mountain soon.

There are rabbits and birds in this area that you can kill and loot for XP and salvage.

Search inside the building to find another salvage crate and a relic (3/6), a Medicinal Herb Vial, part of the Kanpo Herbs set. Be sure to examine it closely for more info and XP. On one side of the room is an alcove boarded up with planks and barbed wire. There's a document back there, but you'll need to find a new weapon to blow up those planks before you can get it. (screenshots)

CLIFFS ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE VILLAGE: Leave the house and head up the steps to the east. At the top, use your torch to light the statue (3/10) for the Illumination Challenge begun the first time you visited the Mountain Village. Then slide down the zip line to the hut below. (screenshots)

From the spot where you land, turn around and go under the hut to find a GPS cache (9/15). Then go up the steps into the hut. Jump from the open edge at the back to grab the ledge with the statue (4/10). Pull up and light its fire for the Illumination Challenge. (screenshots)

Jump back over to the roof of the hut you just came from. Use your torch to light the hanging burner with the bones. Then step back, shoot a rope arrow into it and pull to swing it into the salvage net ahead. The fire spreads and burns away the net. Carefully climb down, find the salvage crate and crack it open. (screenshots)

NOTE ON REVISTING AREAS FROM PART 1: The area off to the northwest is the same group of huts you visited while climbing to the top of the waterfall on your first visit to this area. If you missed anything there last time, you'll have a good opportunity to explore that area again in a moment. The first Challenge Tomb is just over the edge to the northwest. If you missed it the first time, you can drop down now and explore if you like. Similarly, if you missed anything in the village below, the zip line will take you there quickly, but you will also be passing this way again later. So you may want to wait until then. I describe all the new collectibles in that area in the walkthrough for Mountain Village Part 3. If you decide to explore the village and then need to return here, the fastest way is to use the Village Plateau base camp to Fast Travel up to the Village Overlook camp. Then retrace your steps from that camp to the hut with the 9th GPS cache.

From the hut, head up the steps to the northeast, toward the smoke beacon and the huge statue on the distant mountaintop. Shoot a rope arrow into the rope-wrapped arch and climb the rope to the ledge above. Follow the path forward and use your axe to climb the rough wall. When you near the top, wait and watch before climbing up onto the ledge. There are 2 Solarii up there. If you move quickly, you can pull up and take them both out with silent headshots using your bow. Target the one on the right first, then the one ahead. Or, wait for them to move into the tunnel on the left, pull up, wait a moment and then follow them. (screenshots)

You should be able to take the first one out with a well-placed arrow from inside the tunnel. Then shoot the other as he comes toward you. Light the statue (5/10) in the tunnel for the Illumination Challenge. Then go through and loot the bodies. If either of them fell over the edge, you can drop down to find them. (screenshots)

This is the "Top of the Falls" area from your first visit to this level. If you missed anything here then, you can pick it up now. Refer to the Mountain Village Part 1 walkthrough if necessary. When you're ready to continue, climb back up by scaling the first climbable wall to the right of the waterfall. At the top, turn around and jump over to the ledge with the 2 statues. Follow the tunnel back to the path you were on before. (screenshots)

CHALLENGE TOMB ENTRANCE: Turn left and follow the path to a broken wooden bridge. Ahead you can see the white graffiti marking another very obvious "secret" tomb. (screenshot) Shoot a rope arrow into the archway above and climb up. Head up the slope, enter the tunnel on the left, and follow it in. When you come to the wooden steps, look to the right to find a salvage crate on a ledge with some candles and bones. This crate may contain a RIFLE PART (1/3). If if doesn't, don't worry. You will find it soon. Continue through the dark tunnel and scramble up a wooden wall to the Hall of Ascension Day Camp.

If you found both bow parts earlier, you can now upgrade the Makeshift Longbow into the elegant RECURVE BOW. You may also have enough salvage for the Key Ring Trigger bow upgrade or another weapon upgrade of your choice. If you missed either of the bow parts, you can go back for them later. See the note about bow parts, above.

HALL OF ASCENSION CHALLENGE TOMB: Cross the wooden bridge and enter the hall. The puzzle here involves wind. The goal is the high ledge straight ahead. To get there, first take note of the 2 cranks: the one near the entrance operates the suspended wooden platform. Turning it raises the platform, but after a few moments, it sinks down to its original position. The other crank, on the far left, closes the shutters so the strong wind no longer blows into the room. They only stay closed for a little while, though. Then they re-open, one at a time, from lowest to highest. (The following sequence is shown in this series of screenshots.)

Begin by cranking the shutters closed. Then run back toward the entrance and stand in front of the crank that operates the wooden platform. Watch the shutters and when the lowest one opens, quickly turn the crank to raise the platform. Run around to the right and pull up onto the dangling platform. (Or, if you prefer, climb onto the wooden chest on the left and then jump onto the plaform.) If you've timed it correctly, the middle shutter will open, then the upper shutter, blowing the platform, with Lara standing on it, toward the opposite wall. You must then run and jump to the painted section of wall and then scramble up it to grab the top of the horizontal plank above.

You may need to play with the timing a bit, depending on how fast you're able to crank, run and jump, but this is the gist of the puzzle. If you raise the platform too soon, it will sink back down before the shutters open far enough to blow you toward the wall. If you open the shutters then raise the platform, the wind blows the platform away before Lara can jump onto it. You need to get the timing just right.

Once Lara has jumped from the platform and grabbed hold of the plank, there's no hurry. Just climb to the left and around the corner. Keep climbing to the left and jump past the gap in the plank to grab onto the plank beyond. Climb to the left as far as possible, then jump down to the ledge with the 2 statues. Go through the doorway between the statues and follow the hall to the end, where you'll find the treasure chest.

You receive 250 XP for reaching the ledge and another 1250 XP, plus 250 salvage points, when you open the chest. This treasure chest also yields a HANDGUN PART (1/3) and the Mountain Village GPS Cache Map, which reveals the locations of all GPS caches in the area on your in-game map.

NOTES: The HANDGUN PART found in this tomb is one of three needed to upgrade this gun. You'll find the others later in the game. If you also raided the Tomb of the Unworthy Challenge Tomb in Mountain Village Part 1, your in-game map should now have the locations of all major collectibles.

Return to the room with the platform and shutters, drop down off the ledge, and cross back over the bridge to the Day Camp to spend your Skill Point and possibly salvage points as well. Then follow the tunnel back outside.

TALL ROCK COLUMNS IN THE CANYON EAST OF THE VILLAGE: Move close to the anchor post and look over the edge. There are lots of interesting rock formations out in the middle of the canyon. Some of them have goodies just waiting to be picked up. There is no "correct" way to explore this area. Here I have attempted to trace a path that covers all items with minimal backtracking.

If you don't care about goodies and want to head straight for the smoke beacon, stand near the anchor post and shoot a rope arrow into the rope-wrapped tree trunk on the grassy column to the southeast. (screenshot) Slide down. From there, jump down to the lower level of the column with the wooden structure on top, also to the southeast. (screenshot) It's a long jump, but if you aim for the rope-wrapped tree trunk and take a running jump, Lara will make it. Then go around to the left, scramble up the wooden wall to the top of the column and pick up the walkthrough at the section "reaching the Smoke Beacon," below.

If you do want all the collectibles, after emerging from the Challenge Tomb, stand near the anchor post and shoot a rope arrow into the arch below on the right. Ride the rope down to the little stream. Or, after exiting the Challenge Tomb, turn right and head back down the hill the way you came. Pass under the arch into which you shot the rope arrow on the way up. Then hang from the edge of the broken wooden bridge, climb down as far as you can and drop into the stream below. In either case, you'll wind up in the same place. (screenshots)

On the left bank of the stream, when facing out over the canyon, is a ledge with the small, wooden structure. On the table there, you'll find a relic (4/6), an Old Photograph from the Semper Fi series. Turn it around to examine the back for bonus XP. (screenshots)

Walk across the fallen tree trunk to the next ledge. Go around to the far side to find and loot a bird's nest (3/5) for the Egg Poacher Challenge. Come back around to the side of the ledge near the fallen tree but instead of crossing back over, use your axe to climb the rough wall to the top. There you'll find another statue (6/10) you can light for the Illumination Challenge. (screenshots)

Stand near the anchor post so the flaming statue is on Lara's left. Shoot a rope arrow into the archway on the little ledge below. Slide down to find a document (3/7), "Hoshi: Answering the Call," from the Ancient Scrolls set. (screenshot)

After reading the scroll, turn around and look to the west. Ahead on the right is the ledge with the nest you looted earlier. Shoot a rope arrow into the rope-wrapped tree stump almost directly in front of you. Climb along the rope and drop down onto the small, grassy column. Hidden in the grass is a GPS cache (10/15). (screenshots)

Step out onto the ledge made of wood planks and jump across the gap to land on the column below and to the southwest. Crack open the salvage crate. This crate may contain a RIFLE PART (2/3). Again, don't fret if it's not here. Just keep opening every salvage crate you find and you'll get it soon. Follow the path up and around to the other side of the column to find another statue (7/10) you can set aflame. Go around to the far side of the statue, stand near the anchor post there and shoot a rope arrow into the rope-wrapped tree on the next column to the northeast. (screenshots)

Slide down there. Then jump up onto the ledge on the right where you'll find another bird's nest (4/5) for the challenge. Jump back down to the ledge where your rope is anchored. Move around to the other side of it and scramble up the wooden wall. At the top, sitting under a little roof, is another document (4/7), "Ambassador: Dark Tidings," also from the Ancient Scrolls series. (screenshots)

NOTE: There are a few GPS caches on your map that you still can't reach yet. (screenshot) They're way down in the valley. You will approach them later from below when you visit this area a third time. The "locked" items and anything you may have missed back in the village proper will also be easier to get then.

REACHING THE SMOKE BEACON: Now it's time to go after Captain Jessop. Move to the other anchor post on this little plateau and shoot a rope arrow into the arch near the parachute and smoke beacon. As you climb across, the post starts to creak a bit. Before Lara can reach the other side, it gives way and she plunges into the canyon, barely managing to hang onto the rope. As soon as you get close to the craggy rock wall, press Interact to sink your climbing axe into it. Then climb up to safety. (screenshots)

You get 200 XP for surviving the fall and reaching the beacon, but Captain Jessop is no where to be found.

OBJECTIVE: Locate the Second Pilot

Go through the open gate straight ahead and follow the path through the canyon. When you come to a dirt slope, slide down into the next area.

NOTE: When you finish this section of the Mountain Village, even if you've collected every possible item, you will still be missing a few of the relics, documents, GPS caches, and challenge items. You will return later, at which time you'll be able to retrieve a few previously inaccessible items and collect anything you may have missed before.
