With the rifle, the reticule turns red, indicating a target lock. When Takamoto fires an energy blast, like this, move back behind the statue. Further details are included in the walkthrough.
Here, Lara has moved to the right side of the statue for a clear shot. When using pistols, the reticule doesn't turn red, since the target is too far away. As long as it turns gray, like this, and not white, some shots will still connect.
